Magic Cinema at Convent Street closed down by flood

Saleufi - One of the worst hit areas.

Taufusi Street - another worst hit area

Fugalei - One of the many victims of overflooding drainage

(video clip to be inserted soon)

Flood prone areas of Apia were again swamped after a night of heavy torrential rainfall last night.
The town population was forced to wade knee high along the footpaths in front of the main shops in the worst hit areas around Taufusi, Saleufi and even along Beach Road at one of the busy shopping spots at Savalalo..
A combination of high tide and blocked drainage carried the blame once again, as it always has been in the past.
Open drainage around the busy Fugalei market overflowed on to the road, forcing unsuspecting motorists to take an unexpected water plunge and an early morning swim.
Businesses around the affected areas were disrupted for most of the day. Some were forced to close as workers rushed to drain the water and dry up their working place.
Flooding is common in Apia at this time of the year.
January and February are the peak months of the hurricane season where pouring torrential rain floods out the town area, and forces the main rivers to over flow the banks.
A mammoth effort costing hundreds of millions of tala will be need to overcome what has become a perennial problem for Apia.

Flooding
written by kawika, January 26, 2008
How is it that all these past years and still there is a problem with flooding in Taufusi, Fugalei and Saleufi area? I was born in Vaimoso, and we also had problems with flood at times especially when the Vai ole Moso river is flowing heavy. Is this problem ever going to be resolve? Really with all the aids the government is receiving from all those different country, they should at least do something about the welfare of those poor souls living around those troubled areas.

Because is more important to fix the auala galues (roads to the plantations) in the villages than doing something about the drainage in town. Prioritising the auala galues makes village people vote the HRPP (governing party) representatives from the districts into parliament. Auala galues surely benefit some villages but not all. In the case of my village in Savaii, only 90 to 100metres of the auala galue was fixed but the govt led by the PM came to open it officially with a church service under a tent and the usual samoan cultural presentations and the usual speeches of promises.
