Beer contributes to $2.2million export increase

The increase in the exportation of beer has contributed to the overall rise in export earnings for the month of April according to the Central Bank of Samoa. The total export earnings for Samoa in the month of April increased by 67% compared to March this year. This is according to the recently released Foreign Trade Report by the CBS. April recorded a $2.2million tala in April, an increase from $861 thousand tala. According to the FTR increased earnings from fresh fish, nonu juice, coconut cream and beer contributed to Aprils export increase. CBS also tributes first time shipments for drinking nuts and ta’amu exports in the first ten months of 2007/2008 to the increase. CBS however says that the absence of coconut oil, cigarettes and handicrafts from the export scene after some export consignments in March 2008, is a ‘downside’ to the April rise. “Lower proceeds were recorded for other export commodities (such as coconuts, re-exports and soft drinks),” the FTR noted. However when compared to April 2007, the current level of exports was 16 percent higher.
