CEO Ministry of Communications and Information, Tua’imalo Ah Samu.

Talk of a bigger and faster broadband to link Samoa online to the global community for is beyond the talking stage now, after the Minister of Communications, Safuneituuga Neri signed an agreement with the company that is going to make all this possible.
The ASH Cable capacity lease agreement, will allow Samoa to hook up to a submarine cable to the same cable that will link American Samoa to Hawaii.
“The underwater cable has already linked New Zealand to Hawaii, but it is now being extended to included American Samoa,” Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Communications, Tua’imalo Ah Samu says.

The opportunity for extending the cable a short distance to include Samoa was raised during talks between the two Samoas.
“ It was a good opportunity for us to take because we are only a few kilometers from American Samoa,” Tua’imalo continued.
The initial set up costs for Samoa is USD$165,000 and thereafter a monthly lease payment of USD$120,000.
“The broadband connection is cheaper for us and with a much bigger trunk capacity than what we are now accessing through the satellite.
“The hookup is also timely because I understand from SamoaTel the satellite access is not far from reaching its full capacity.”
The advantages of a higher speed broadband connection extends right across the board for social and economic developments.
All sectors from schools, health, tourism and especially the private sector are expected to benefit from the link up.
Tua’imalo is positive that the improved link up will open the way for more competitions with ISP servers, keen to have their own gateway.
Improved access to the internet is expected to create a more competitive environment similar to the mobile phone service.
“The SamoaTEL 10 year exclusive ends in 2009, which is right on time for the new broadband underwater cable to start in January -February.”
The ASH Cable network is a consortium that owns the submarine broadband cable.
