Fiji Jumped Gun On Lifting Of Kava Ban

Samoa’s representative in the fight to lift the kava ban, Eddie Wilson Representatives of the kava producing community in the Pacific Islands are cringing over media reports emanating from Fiji that the European Union has lifted the ban on the herbal product. Chairman of Fiji’s Kava Council, Ratu Josetaki Nawalowalo, went public with the announcement of the ban lift on the heels of talks in Brussels involving International Kava Executive Council representatives, Pacific Island ambassadors and European Commission leaders. “As far as we are concerned it was always a big mistake. It was all uncalled for,” he said “We gave evidence that pacific islanders over 3,000 years have been consuming kava and there was no reason and no data to confirm that it had killed people.” The ban was imposed six years ago because of serious health concerns, including alleged reports of deaths related to liver failure, caused by drinking kava. Kava is a mildly narcotic herbal drink popular in Pacific countries. He’s told Radio Australia’s Pacific Beat, the decision upholds their belief that Kava is safe. Samoa’s representative and Co-Chairman of the International Kava Executive Council (IKEC), Mr. Eddie Wilson rejected the announcement by the Fijis representative as untrue. “We have a few areas to clear up first that may take us a little more time to finalise, but it is not true that the ban on kava has been lifted.” Comments (0) Subscribe to this comment's feed Write comment Name Email Title Comment
