Signs “Closed” were seen much earlier on most businesses in town due to the flooding.

When it was impossible to stop the water, some businessowners had to protect some of their assets by storing them on higher stalls and tables.

Sick and tired of waiting, residents

Most businesses along Taufusi St, Saleufi and Savalalo areas were forced to close for most of Friday as flooding water made operations impossible.
By mid-morning Friday, employees and owners of these businesses were seen stacking sand sacks to try to block water from entering their shops.
But as heavy rain continues, water level got higher thus making it impossible for these business owners to keep the water out.
“There wasn’t much we could do,” one business owner said. “We just had to lift all our equipment to higher places to avoid damages.”
The owner said this wasn’t the first time this has happened.
“We have asked all the appropriate authorities over the past years to sort this out. Mind you this isn’t the first time this has happened.
“They have come around and took photos of all these areas but that’s about all they have done.”
Newsline understands there’s funding worth millions being put aside for a sanitation projects for flood prone areas in town.
But judging from Friday’s flooding it seems like actions have yet to be taken to solve this seemed to be an ongoing problem.
“You know it’s really sad that the authorities have seemed too careless about this problem,” the business moaned. We won’t be making any businesses if this continues.”
Meanwhile, residents of these areas have also showed concerns about the approach taken by the government towards handling this problem.
“I have lived here for years,” Lusiano Tiatia of Saleufi said. “Nothing much has changed. Every time there’s heavy rain, there’s flooding and when it’s all over, we are left with damages worth up to thousands of dollars.”
Like business owners, Mr Tiatia said they have contacted government authorities about their plight.
“They’ve been telling us that they will sort it out,” he said. “But this is not a sign of anything being sorted out.”
One thing this reporter noticed yesterday was the number of children swimming in the muddied water filled with rubbish varied from empty bottles to used baby napkins, foils, plastic bags and so much more.
With a number of family houses there and also public toilets, no doubt septic waste was also in the water.
But that didn’t some of the kids who enjoyed a day swimming while a couple of grown men were busy paddling their way around town on a floating squared object.
They were yelling out hello as their dingy looked object float behind the shops at the Fugalei market.
