Staff at the Institute for Reasearch and Development  RDIS,  hard at work in response to the quest for alternative energies

Methanol and copra oil are the selected sources of alternative energy Government is putting the shoulder behind, to ease the pressure of soaring world oil prices on Samoa’s economy.
The production of copra oil is already well in advance in the two pronged approach with a private company set to start copra oil production in a few months time.
The extraction of methanol from breadfruit is now a top priority for the Research and Development Institute RDIS.
The plan is for the processing of methanol to be underway in 5 years time.
Copra and breadfruit are easy choices for the development of biofuel as alternative sources of renewable energy, as there is an abundance of them in Samoa.
“We have a lot of breadfruits, practically every family in Samoa has one or two growing on their land,” Director of RDIS, Taito Mr. Fa’ale Tumali’i pointed out. (see story)
A similar observation was made about coconut trees by the Managing Director of Pacific Oil Company, Samau Mr. Etuale Sefo.
“Coconut is one of the few natural resources in Samoa we have plentiful of,” he noted. (see story)
The push for alternative fuel, preferably renewable is an option that has been known for a long time not just in Samoa.
Their use as a substitute for fossil fuel was found to be costly by comparison.
Oil imports for Samoa has reached the stage now where it is a serious threat to any economic progress, hence the serious push now underway for coconut oil and methanol extraction from breadfruits.
