Funerals, weddings and chiefly bestowals continue to lead the slaughtering demands on the national cattle herd, a report tabled in Parliament confirmed this week.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries annual report for the 12 months from July 2005-2006 recorded 8,000 cows slaughtered during the period for family obligations.
The number makes up two thirds of all the 12,000 animals put down for public use during the period.

The Parliamentary sub-committee report confirmed that the demands from farmers for cattle remains high and is not being met.
A prepared guideline for farmers on livestock management “ is recommended to help with the development of animal farming.
