The results of months of plugging away at ways to help local exporters find access to international markets, are being brought up for the public to screen and to comment on in the one-day symposium underway at the Hotel Kitano today.
A draft document of a first ever national export strategy is the centre of attention in the discussions.
The blueprint intended to boost local exports is the work of a steering committee who has been working together since last October to look at host of market opportunities for Samoa to tap into.
What will basically emerge after the strategy is approved and ready for use is trade information that will be made available to local exporters to take advantage of and to make their products more competitive.
Funding information will also be made available for their perusal and a host of other support recommendations to help out.
“The whole objective is to help our local supporters effort to penetrate overseas market,” a senior trade official says.
The exported of locally manufactured goods are restricted in many ways by lack of financial assistance for exporters to improve on the necessary quality demanded by international importers.
The American Samoa market is currently where more than 50% of our local exports are heading but mainly for fish and other agricultural produce.
The potential is there for the sale of manufactured goods if the high standards required by federal laws on imported food are met.
The new national co-ordinated approach is a timely initiative for Samoa’s flagging export effort.
Earnings from local exports plummeted by more than half from $56 million in 2000 to a mere $26 million in 2006.
The co-ordination of local exports is handled individually by the respective sectors involved, and whether this will all now come under a national plan is yet to be made clear.
Today’s symposium will determine the general opinion from stakeholders to help fine tune the proposed national strategic plan.
