EXCITED : Vice Chancellor of the National University of Samoa, Magele Mauiliu.

The National University of Samoa switched off all air conditions and lights at the Institute of High Education (IHE) last Friday, at the start of what is going to be a weekly power saving exercise at the Le Papaigalagala campus.

Operation Friday Switch Off, as some of the staff members are calling it, allows only for computers and fans to be switched on at the IHE.

NUS Vice Chancellor, Magele Muailiu, is excited by the prospects of the exercise easily shaving at the very least $10,000 off the university campus power bill of more than $90,000 a month.

“This is actually a trial to find out how much we can save on our electricity expenses,” Magele said last night.

“This cost saving measure is inspired by the findings of a 2 year efficiency management project, run by the Japanese on the Institute of Technology (IOT).”

The Technology Institute was built under assistance from Japan and the efficiency management project referred to as KAIZEN, took a comprehensive review of all areas including administration.

The use of air conditions, lights and other electrical usage was one of the key areas of assessment.

“Air conditions were eased up to a warmer 25–26 degrees from a normal low of 22-23 degrees and light bulbs found unnecessary were switched, off amongst other areas where electricity could be used efficiently.”

The project ended last week and among the key findings that was brought to the attention of the Vice Chancellor, were savings of just over $1,200 a month on the IOT’s electricity bill.

“The report also suggested that savings of $63,120 could be made and that was inspiring enough for us to try out this Friday switch off.

“The IHE uses much more electricity than the IOT and I’m sure we could save a lot on our electricity usage if we can be more efficient.”

Window curtains are being pulled to the side to let the light in, and windows opened to allow in the cool air.

The NUS initiative should be welcomed by the beleaguered Electric Power Corporation, that was only a few weeks ago forced to raise surcharges because of world market increases in oil prices.
