(file photo) Fugalei market sets  economic yardstick for Samoa

Local monetary officials believe that current world concerns about the global food crisis is far from taking hold in Samoa, with a rich supply of stables like taroes and bananas constantly flooding the local market.
But the pinch may come from popular imports like meat, flours, sugar and rice, where current economic trends with record oil prices pushing up inflation rates, is a genuine concern.
The Central Bank recorded a 20.9 % increase in the price of rice between the months of February and March, 5.3% for sugar and 3.7 per cent for flours.
Meat products are also continuing to climb.
“ We should be able to have a clearer picture of the impact of world economic trends on Samoa, from the results of the Household Income and Expenditure Survey  currently underway,” a senior monetary official noted.
The survey is held after every 5 years to determine the national price index, assessment of poverty and the economic benchmarks for national accounts.
An international assessment of the global food crisis describes the situation as ‘ a silent tsunami which knows no border sweeping the world…that has hit  with little warning and has plunged an extra 100 million people into poverty.”
Famine is not what the crisis is all about, but “widespread misery and malnutrition” that has already triggered riots in several parts of the world.
The blame is leveled at the ‘lethal combination of high fuel costs, bad weather in key food producing countries , more land allocated to bio-fuels and a surge in demands.”

'food miles' and local food production
written by Dr Alec Thornton, May 18, 2008
In small island states, such as Samoa, vulnerabilites to the increase cost of oil and food could be minimised if local food production where emphasised as part of a domestic agricultural policy. Of course, should Samoa gain entry to the WTO, certain rules might apply 'requiring' Samoa to increase its food imports, which could put households, particularly those on a low-income, at further risk.
