Senior Australian and Samoan officials, along with stakeholders from international aid donors, business, community groups and non government organisations, met for a one-day seminar in Apia today to discuss the new Australia - Samoa Pacific Partnership for Development.

The Australia-Samoa Partnership for Development was signed at the Niue Pacific Island Leaders Forum in August by the Prime Ministers of Samoa and Australia. Through the Partnership, Australia will provide further assistance to support Samoa to make more rapid progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

The five Partnership priority areas are private sector growth and employment, climate change and improved health, education and governance.

Speaking at the seminar, CEO of the Ministry of Finance, Hinauri Petana said the seminar brings together key stakeholders to come up with different ideas for delivering assistance to Samoa.

“We hope that by bringing all the key people together we can jointly agree on the implementation plans and schedules for the five key priority areas in the new Partnership,” Ms Petana said.

Australian High Commissioner to Samoa, Matt Anderson said the role of the seminar to translate the Pacific Partnership for Development framework document into workable implementation schedules.

“We can then turn this into real strategies and programs that support the development of the people of Samoa,” Mr Anderson said.

“This Partnership is a practical expression of the Australian Government’s desire to enter into a new era of cooperation with the Governments of the Pacific. It is about mutual respect, mutual responsibility and mutual accountability in addressing Samoa’s economic and development challenges.”

As the Older Brother of the Pacific-- Australia has a responsibilty to the Pacific
written by now now , November 19, 2008
The support the island nations in the vast Pacific, is in the utmost interest of Australia. As well I am interested in the island nations of the surrounding nations to Samoa to receive the same support.

It makes sense to support the needs, not on a grant basis, but a support assurance to obtain momentum towards self sustainbility.

Many relations can be hatched by all sides and so many more benefits to accompany.
I hope both nations can see the value.
