Second Samoan Township Opens

The port village of Salelologa is today declared the first official township for the bigger island of Savaii. The Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi and his full Cabinet made the ferry trip across this afternoon for the historic event. Members of the business community in Savaii and the traditional leaders of Salelologa village are all expected to attend. The township is the initiative of the late Prime Minister Tofilau Eti Alesana, who held firmly to the belief that it would be a major step for the boosting of developments on the island. The township is located next to the Salelologa Wharf, along the eastern end of Savaii where most of the population is concentrated. Several businesses are already operating inside the designated area, and today’s opening is expected to see a noticeable transformation as commercial activities steps up.
