September 7th is switch date

After months of the Right Hand Drive debate, the Government of Samoa has finally announced the date when Samoa will switch from driving on the right hand side of the road to the left hand side. The Minister of Transport, Tuisugaletaua Aveau announced today that the Section 1 of the Road Transport Reform Act 2008 of Samoa will come into force at 6:00am on Monday the 7th of September 2009. His statement reads: “The public is hereby informed that the required position for all vehicles being driven, parked or otherwise used in Samoa under normal traffic conditions shall shift from the right hand side to the left hand side of the centre point of the roadway.” To mark the switch date, the Minister also advised that the 7th and 8th of September 2009 are now declared as publice holidays to “allow for familiarization with the change.” Meanwhile the court case against the Government by the Peoples Against Switching Sides (PASS) will commence on the 4th of August. President of Samoa Umbrella for Non Government Organisations (SUNGO) Vaasiliifiti Moelagi Jackson says it is good that the Government has announced the date for the switch. “It’s good, that gives the people time to prepare, and it also gives us time to lobby to delay it back,” Vaasiliifiti said.
