Women dominate Manufacturing PDF Print E-mail

The recently revisited Report on the Status of Women in Samoa shows that there are by far more women in manufacturing than men.
It records that a total of 1,597 women worked in Manufacturing compared to 796 men.
Women take more than 60% of that industry according to the report.
Ironic, since manufacturing is usually stereotyped as a male occupation, but the numbers obviously shows otherwise.
Perhaps the figures reflect the employees of the largest manufacturing company in Samoa, Yazaki EDS Samoa which is dominated by women.
But that is the only industry where women outnumber men by far.
In 1995 there were only two other industries where the number of women were slightly higher than men.
Hotels and Restaurant showed five more women then men in that industry while Finance and Business Services faired a little better with a difference of 17.
Men lead other industries, sometimes by the hundreds like Agriculture and Fishing in 1995 with 960 men and 182 women.
The report noted that although the workforce recorded a decline since 1995, women workers increased from 42% to 43%.
The 1999 records showed 13,154 males and 9,907 women in the workforce.
The report noted that 70% of Employers are male and 1% female.
A mere 5% of women are self employed while men tower at 64%.
The 2001 Census records 51% ot the population 15 years and over as economically active, of that number 31% are females.
Women are also protected under the constitution according to the report.
It states that the woman has “the right to work as an inalienable right of all human beings.”
It goes on to say that the woman has “the right to the  same employment opportunities including the application of the same criteria for selection, the right to free choice of profession employment, promotion and job security” it also indicates a womans right to benefits and conditions of services.
