Hats were the most preferred by church going mothers

Young Mothers check out the merchandise

Stall owners at the Radio Polynesian Market Day, confirmed to Newsline that the most popular item on sale were church hats.
The tradition of women wearing hats to church goes way back hundreds of years to the time of the missionaries, when they introduced hats for women to wear.
One Methodist mother explained to Newsline why it is important to wear a hat to church.
“It says so in the bible, God tells the women of Israel that to show respect, they must cover their heads when they attend church. Off course women in Israel used cloths however Samoan women have opted for hats,” says the 62 from Vaimoso.
The mother adds that the missionaries insisted that the women shall cover themselves when in church, and as a rule they do so, by wearing hats to church.
The tradition of wearing hats is more commonly found with women of the LMS and Methodist Churches.
The hats are round shaped and with the introduction of new styles and fashions, the hats are available in different colors, although mostly black and white are sold according to one stall owner.
However the hats do come at a price, a very large price,in fact  some hats cost as much as SAT$300, and according to stall owners these are the hats of the highest quality.
The majority of the women buy white hats, confirmed one stall owner.
The hats are only ideal for Church however, these are the same types of hats some may see at events such as the Melbourne Cup, where its all about the hats.
