Albert Wendt is acknowledged internationally as one of New Zealand’s and the Pacific’s major novelists, poets and intellectuals. His work has been translated into many languages and is taught throughout the world. He has won many accolades and prizes and been awarded numerous honours.
What is not well known is that he is also a painter. He studied art at Ardmore Teachers College, with artists such as Selwyn Muru and Sandy Adsett, but has spent most of his life writing.
He returned to painting in 2000 and has been painting with a huge passion since then.

For the past four years he lived in Hawai’i and in September 2007, had his first exhibition of paintings at the Louis Pohl Gallery in Honolulu. It was very successful. He returned to his home in Ponsonby in July 2008, and has continued painting with the same intensity and passion.
This is his first exhibition in New Zealand, proudly host by McCarthy Art Gallery.

COMES THE REVOLUTION
written by Plato, November 18, 2008
Comes the revolution is one of Alberts first peices he wrote back in the sixties when he was teaching history at Samoa College. I thought it was a pretty good play that was put on the stage by Samoa college students at the time. I remember him well. An excellent teacher, I'm very proud of him and his work..
Truly More Alberts are needed---
written by more Albert's, November 19, 2008
find me another Samoan Albert-- duplicate, teach more Samoans, teach more thought provoking generations, more poets, more novelists, more artists, more storytellers and readers of thoughts, of the minds of men, of history, of life, of death, of Shakepeare, of Plato, of Aristotle, and this, and that-- more is better

The literate people will give a society its joy to engage a world that is ever so present, past and its future.

Tama Samoa
Congrtulations, Mr. Wendt
written by Pat Maslowski, November 19, 2008
I traveled to New Zealand to meet him in 1992 because I was studying Samoan mythology and Mr. Wendt's use of it in his novels and poetry on a NEH grant. He was gracious and kind, and it was a great privilege to meet him. I videotaped our conversation, and I taught some of his short stories and poetry when I returned to my teaching job in Colorado.

I am delighted to hear that his creativity continues in still another medium. Best wishes, Mr. Wendt. My admiration and appreciation of your gifts is unbounded.
