AA CONTACT : Mr. James Skeleton

An Alcoholic Anonymous Chapter has tread along quietly in Apia, away from the fanfare of the media limelight because it goes against the nature of confidentiality of those seeking help for their addiction.
A former member of the Marist Brother’s Order, Mr. James Skeleton, is behind the setting up of the help organization, recognised and respected around the world for their work on people with alcohol problems.
‘The identity of people involved with Alcohol Anonymous are kept strictly confidential because of the nature of the work.
“We hold Monday meetings once a month where we sit around in a group and basically talk out our situation and we keep this strictly confidential to members of the group only, nothing goes out,” Skeleton says.
“This is very important in our work and the only time we use the media is when we call for our scheduled meetings.
“We’ve already had our first meeting and we only let people know about it during the 9.00am Mass at Mulivai on Sunday. We also posted a notice around the church to inform people about us and about our meeting.”
Skeleton made it clear also that the AA group is not a church organization rather it is an international organization where everyone regardless of denomination or race is welcomed to attend.
He strongly advised as well that AA is not a ‘quick fix’ effort for people with drinking problems.
“The only way this will work is when people are willing to do something about their addiction to alcohol and are genuinely looking for help.
“There are steps in the process of healing that the person has to go through and the spiritual side plays an important part. So unless you are fully committed AA will not work for you.”
Skeleton is a registered member of the international organization, but was not actively involved until now, because for the last two years he has been working in Savaii as principal of the Marist Brothers Ulimasao College.
He has been given dispensation from Rome to resign from the Marist Order, so he can enter the seminary to study for the priesthood and is expected to do so next year.
He is hoping there will be a core group to continue the work when he leaves.
“Alcohol addiction is not about people who cannot stay away from alcohol, it also involves people who turn violent when they drink, compared to social drinkers who enjoy themselves when they drink.”
Skeleton can be contacted on phone 774 0476 .
