Leila Meredith Nauer (in black, 3rd from left) with her children who are all serving in the American military with relatives at the funeral service of father and grandfather Lauofo Meti at the Magiagi Cemetery.

Aaron and Ann Rose Adrienne

It was about 8 years ago when Ms. Leila Meredith Nauer saw her 3 girls and only son start to flap their wings and fly out of the family nest in Apia to join the military forces of the land of their birth, United States of America.
Aaron 26, Ann Rose 25 and Ashley 23 left for the army and Adrienne 24 the Air Force.
Leila stayed home and watched with a brave heart as her kids “ grew up very fast’ and left one by one.
It was only until Adrienne called on her services to come over to Arizona and baby sit for her 2 children, three years ago, did she set off to play the loving role of granny.
In the next 3 years, baby sitting and holding down two jobs, kept her busy and distracted from worrying about her other children.
Brief reunions were treasured when her soldiers rushed home for short Rest and Recreation (RnR) breaks with a waiting Mom, grateful for the brief moments spent with her children again.
Aaron, 26, the eldest in the family and Ann Rose 25, the second eldest, have each done two tours of active duties in Iraq of up to 15 months each.

Aaron is based in California while Ann Rose is in Texas.
Afghanistan is likely to be their next assignment s, to add on to the earlier tours of duty they have already logged up in Iraq.
Aaron is involved with the mechanical engineering division while Ann Rose is in personnel.
Ashley, 23, the youngest, has a year and half more to go to complete her army officer’s training in Florida.
Adrienne, 24, is the odd one out, She is the only one married and rather than follow everyone else into the army she joined the air force.
The mother of two is due to relocate to England with her children to link up with her husband, and a F15 fighter plane.
Adrienne is an armaments system specialist and her job is to ensure the aircraft’s armaments system is battle ready at all times.
Basically for Leila and her children, it is everyone to his/her own, with quick snatches of get togethers whenever they can manage them.
But they have never been together again all at once like the last time 8 years ago – until last week.
The occasion of the reunion was sad with the passing away of the late Lauofo Meti, the family patriarch, who was father and grandfather to Leila and her children,
A get together of the whole family under one roof once again, was the sweet part of the bittersweet gathering.
“I am very proud of my children,” Leila said after taking a moment to talk to Newsline.
“They have all turned out very well, they are independent and have learned to survive on their own.
“As a mother I can never stop worrying about them, all mothers do. When I was in Arizona I worked two jobs at Wal Mart to keep me busy and occupied, so I don’t have to fret about them.”
All of the children were educated in Apia at St Mary’s College for the girls and St. Joseph’s College for the son, and right throughout they knew they would eventually return to their country of birth.
The transition from school to leaving for further studies outside the country is something Leila is familiar with, because she went through the same process with her sisters and brothers as well.
“We all left for schooling in New Zealand after Form 5 here, so I could relate to my children leaving when it was time for them to do so.
“Leaving here is just the way its gotta be for them because it is unfair to try and keep them here when there is really nothing to keep them here.”
With her kids all grown up now and doing their own thing, Leila’s proven skills as family care taker is, surprisingly enough, needed closer to home to tag up with Mom not that Dad is gone.
“I’m in the right place, it is here where I am needed. I will always worry about my kids but they can take care of themselves and will always visit when they can.”

Coming from a family of military background, I can relate to her worries. She knows she's done a good job in raising her children and the confidence she has for them will always be an important part of their lives. My niece returned recently from her 3rd tour in Afghanistan and my nephew is still in Iraq. These young men and women are setting an example of bravery, honor and committment. May the good Lord bless and keep you all safe.

I'm proud to say that Leila is a childhood friend from Levili ...though we were too young to even know it since we were both toddlers. But our mothers tell the story. Then at St. Mary's College, our paths again crossed. One of my best memories of Leila is when she, another classmate and I acted out a scene from Macbeth... She had to play a male part which she did splendidly and clinched the award that year for best drama performance in Upper 5.
On the few chance encounters I had with Leila before she moved back to the United States, she would always talk about her children. She has done a marvellous job raising them. Her late father (may he rest in peace) , as indeed her mother Lupe, would be very proud of the strength, resilience and achievements of their eldest daughter. It's also a tribute to the late Lauofo Meti and Lupe Meredith for the example they set for Leila and her siblings. I know Leila's children and grandchildren are just as proud of her!

May the good Lord bless Ms. Nauer and her family in their loss of a Father and the military service and sacrifice of their children? Also, a blessing for all the families who have had a lost one in the war and the grieving they are going through. And may the good Lord continue to bless those in the Armed Service of the U.S. Military who serve and sacrifice.
