There is an old saying, “Many hands make light work.”
There were certainly many hands coming together at Leauva’a the past several months and, although the work was hard, those many hands certainly helped make it lighter.  The result is an expansion of the reclaimed land area which houses a sports field at the back of St. Michael’s Catholic Church by 1,250 square meters.

The Canada Fund was the main donor to the project with a generous grant of $54,000 complementing the original grant of US$10,000 donated by the Salesians of Don Bosco Mission in Warsaw, Poland.  AUSAID also contributed $11,000 to the project to ensure the safety of the children when using the ground.  This money was used to erect a 12’ high steel-wire fence around the field.

The parishioners of St. Michael’s Catholic Church contributed 25% of the cost of the project by doing fundraising in addition to supplying most of the labour to complete the project.

As St. Michael’s Catholic Church is run by the Salesians of Don Bosco, the students of Don Bosco Alafua volunteered to help with the project.  The students, under the supervision of their welding teacher, were responsible for erecting the steel fence, a job which required both muscle and know-how.

During the visit of the Salesian’s Reverend Fr. Provincial Francis Maloney who was here from Australia, the new field was blessed at an evening ceremony last week.  His Excellency Matt Anderson, High Commissioner of Australia, cut the ribbon officially opening the field to the public.

When asked who would benefit from the project, Father John Walenciej, parish priest at St. Michael’s, said that all youth in Leauva’a and surrounding areas would have full access to the field. “It is not a field for church use,” said Father John. “It is a field for all village and district youth to enjoy.”

Leauva’a is a densely populated village and has little land for sports activities.  Now the youth of Leauva’a, girls and boys alike, will be able to participate in the many different sports activities played on the field every evening.  Father John quoted St. Don Bosco who once said, “A busy field puts the devil out of work.”  And Fr. John added, “That is what this project is all about.”
