Critics Shun Women For Mixing With Men PDF Print E-mail

Participants of a recent `seminar to form a men's advocacy group against domestic violence.

The interim committee appointed to put together an official advocacy body for men to address the problem of violence against women, is already under criticisms before it even breaks any sweat.
The committee is under fire for allowing the appointment of two women.
Also complained about is the overlooking of more younger men in favour of the grown ups.
“This should be a men’s only affair, women should stay away or go where the women are,” critics complained about including the women in the interim committee.
“The men should be left to think and decide for themselves, rather than have the women around to influence the decision making.
“Having only the older men is also lopsided.
“There should be a younger grouping as well so you will have a balanced cross-section of views and opinions about the violence and how to overcome it.
”The critical reactions are in response to a special meeting, organized by the Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development at the Tooa Salamasina Hall last week to bring the men together.
A temporary committee was then selected from the participants to thrash out a blue print for setting up a men’s advocacy group.
The idea of a men’s advocacy group, is part of an on going community drive to face up to the problem of domestic violence, where the situation involving women is reportedly increasing all the time.
“The men are the protectors of the family, but they are at the same time too, the perpetrators of domestic violence,” Ms. Kuiniselani Tago, Assistance Chief Executive Officer of the Women’s Division of the Ministry start at the start of the drive last week.
The use of a men’s group is a new approach for handling the problem and according to Ms. Tago it does have a strong support base from the donor agencies.
“I’m sure there will be funding available for promoting the work of the group, at the same time too the Ministry will be alongside to provide the technical support to ensure that it gets off on a strong footing.”
The male viewpoint places the responsibility squarely on the perpetrators of the violence, in the opinion of the head of the division of internal affairs and also a leading influence on the revival of the national culture, Maulolo Tavita Amosa.
“The greater awareness of the situation in a village environment will make it possible to hold accountable even the top ranked chief or chiefs in a village or district, if they are the perpetrators,” Maulolo felt.
