Farmers Need Tariff Cuts Not RHD Cars

WHAT FARMERS NEED : Farmers Association Secretary Aiolupotea Jeff Atoa The Secretary of the Samoa Farmers Association, Aiolupotea Jeff Atoa, would rather have tariff cuts on agricultural imports instead of right hand cars. Aiolupotea joined the thousands who marched to Parliament on Monday in protest to the RHD Bill, that is likely to be passed in the current session of the House. “Farmers can be more productive if tariffs and duties on items such as chemicals, fertilizers and seeds were removed or reduced significantly,’ Aiolupotea argued. “These are things that will benefit farmers directly, not a right hand car that could be brought in and used to do other things that does not necessarily benefit agriculture,’ he continued. The development of unproductive land is one of the key arguments the Government is putting up to support the controversial policy to switch sides of the road and to allow for RHD cars to be imported to replace the current LHD drive fleet. Aiolupotea is among the new breed of farmers pushing to encourage modern methods of farming that offers better promise for the agricultural industry. “If we can make these agricultural items readily affordable for farmers it will go a long way in the development of the farming industry, and in encouraging people to return to the land.” Comments (0) Subscribe to this comment's feed Write comment Name Email Title Comment
