Tattooist Suluape Pita maps out where the tattoo will run for Norah Tiavaasue.

Mary’s mother, Teleofa Wulf looks on quietly while the tattooists work

A young Samoan lady who hailed all the way from the Land Down Under, was one of the centre attractions at the Teuila Festival tattooing stage earlier this week.
Norah Tiavaasue came under the tattooing stick of master tattooist, Tufuga Suluape Pita, for a traditional tattoo reserved only for the women, known as the ‘MALU’.
The MALU for women is done on the thighs and appears as spotted patterns of selected designs.
Weightlifting Champion Ele Opeloge recently exposed the ‘MALU’ to the appreciative eyes of world viewers when she competed at the Beijing Olympics in China a few weeks ago.

The Teuila Festival has this week contributed to adding Norah Tiavaasue to the exclusive circle of young Samoan ladies carrying on the tradition of the MALU.
Norah’s sister Crystal was close by to give her moral support during the ritual of tattooing.
Tourists and other curious onlookers surrounded the small Samoan hut while the master tattooist did his work on the Australian based Samoan.
Another young lady from the village of Moamoa, Miss Mary Wulf made the traditional commitment as well.
Her mother and brother were there to be with her.
