It has been 46 years today when the flag of Samoa was raised as an independent nation for the first time since Germany and New Zealand staked colonial claims in the country.
Since then Samoa has had three Heads of State, including His Highness Tupua Tamasese Efi who is the current holder of office.
His Highness now occupies the seat his father, the late Tupua Tamasese Meaole once shared with the late Malietoa Tanumafili II.
The Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegao, is only the 6th person to hold office, since the late Mataafa Faumuina Mulinuu II became Prime Minister  in 1962.
The celebrations for this year start in the churches across the land where respect is paid to the national motto ; Samoa is Founded On God.
Attention will then shift to the grounds of Parliament or ‘Malae o Tiafau’ where the ceremonial flag raising will take place as it has always been every year.
The country will then march once again to the proud drumbeats of an independent nation, in the form of schools and organizations, as they have done so in every one of the 46 years of celebrations.
Traditional dancing and popular activities like the fautasi racing will highlight the three days of celebrations for this year.
The occasion reflects on the course of development Samoa has steered since the imperial shackles of colonialism were removed.
The leaders who carefully nurtured the country’s nationhood since independence will be remembered with a strong sense of gratitude.
They may have passed on but their guidance, wisdom and foresight has left a legacy that shines like a homing beacon for the county’s leadership to steer towards in times of need.
As Samoans celebrate they will do so with the bragging rights of shinning through as a bastion of stability in a region where instability has reared its ugly head, to threaten peace and wellbeing.
Happy 46th Birthday to the leadership and people of Samoa on this important occasion.
God Bless The Country Founded On His Name.
