Governor looks on as aunty Lupe Lauofo acknowledges the honour of being presented the Samoan flag by the Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi.

American Samoa’s Governor Togiola Tulafono and his wife were among the dignitaries who attended the final services of the late Hon. Lauofo Meti, a distinguished public servant, political leader and businessman in Apia.
He joined the local dignitaries led by the Head of State , His Highness Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese, and Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, for the final farewell to this distinguished Samoan leader.
The Governor is related to Lauofo Meti through his wife Mrs. Lupe Meredith, who is his aunty on his maternal side.
“Lupe is the youngest of all our parents,” Governor Tulafono revealed after the funeral service at the Magiagi National Cemetery.

He made the comment while surrounded by cousins from Apia and New Zealand.
“Whenever we are in Apia, we always stay with uncle and aunty, Lauofo was perhaps the closest uncle we had on this side of Samoa.”
The American Samoa leader made a quick dash to Apia to attend the funeral with his wife, shortly after arriving back into the territory from a trip to the mainland USA.
‘Lauofo and I used to talk a lot about Samoa’s independence on my visits when I was a lawyer, and it was an issue that I thought was worth pondering for Manu’a and Tutuila, after seeing what has become of independence here.
“It may have been difficult in the beginning but it has worked out well for you.”
The Governor and his party returned on an evening flight back to American Samoa today.
