In response to The Little Sisters of the Poor, Mapuifagalele’s plea for Government
assistance with their monthly electricity bills, the Government of Samoa has stepped in
for the next 12 months.
On Tuesday 12 August 2008, the Minister of Works, Transport and Infrastructure,
Honourable Tuisugaletaua Sofara Aveau, on behalf of the Government, presented a
letter to the Management of the Little Sisters of the Poor, advising them of the
Government’s support.
The Government support through its Community Service Obligation (CSO), as stated in
the letter, is providing financial assistance of $48,000 for one year ( i.e. $4,000 per
month) to Mapuifagalele’s electricity bills. Starting from July 2008, $4,000 will be
deducted from their monthly electricity bill, and paid for by Government through its
Community Service Obligation.
“The Government of Samoa appreciates the good work that you are contributing for the
elderly persons of Samoa and wishes you continued success with the running of the
Home for the Aged” Honourable Tuisugaletaua Sofara Aveau said, during the
presentation.
Sister Josephine Chan Ting in return thanked the Government of Samoa, for this
assistance, as this will assist them financially.
Members of the Electric Power Corporation’s Board of Directors, along with some of
the Management were also present to witness this event.
