HEAD OF STATE INDEPENDENCE DAY SPEECH 2008 PDF Print E-mail
Written by HEAD OF STATE OFFICE
Monday, 02 June 2008

Head of State, His Highness Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese.

I want to thank the Lieutenant Governor of American Samoa and his good lady, the Representative of the Head of the Tokelau Administration and his good lady, the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of American Samoa and their good ladies, the Honourable Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin, Congressman of the United States of America; for attending our Independence celebrations.

The text for my address is: Do this in remembrance of me.

Independence Day is a day of celebrating remembrance.

We remember God’s love acknowledged in homily and prayer by Rev Elder Tavita Roma.

We remember with gratitude and reverence the memory of His Highness Malietoa Tanumafili II.

We remember our forbears’ struggle for Independence – inspired by the Samoan saying, a e mana’o I le pe’a talia tiga – if you want a pe’a, you have to bear the pain. This is reinforced by Christ’s message, we achieve through sacrifice.

We remember that one of the main lessons we learn from the struggle for Independence is that we overcome through shared moral purpose, unity and sacrifice.

We remember the moral support and the spiritual guidance of our Church leaders and all religious denominations.

We remember with appreciation the many achievements of our government, public servants and businesses, graphically symbolized by the successful hosting of the South Pacific Games last year.

We remember the contribution of the Judiciary to Law and Order and the stability of government.

We remember the loyalty and support of fellow citizens.

We remember governments, institutions and individuals who are and have been good to us. We remember them in our expressions of gratitude and in our prayers.

I have to remember to speak briefly because many people especially school children woke up in the early hours of the morning and have been exposed to the elements for long hours.

Therefore In conclusion, I want t o say that the people who woke up early in the morning, washed, got dressed, came to the Eleele Fou, braved the sun and rain to march from there to Mulinuu and wait patiently for the formalities to begin, they articulate more powerfully in gesture the message of remembrance than I can articulate in speech.

Let us pray that what we do and say today, sustains the legacy of remembrance.

God Bless!

Soifua
