His Highness the Head of State, Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi, is the new patron of the newly formed ‘Pacific Leadership Foundation” for a period of three years.
PLF was established after the successful completion of the first ‘Emerging Pacific Leaders Conference’ ELPD in 2006.
ELPD was an intensive professional development programme bringing together close to 120 individuals in early to mid career on a path to senior leadership roles.
The programme was designed for Pacific Islanders with leadership potential and likely to be influential in the coming decades in their communities, organizations, businesses and nations.
The Head of State was the keynote speaker at the opening of the 2006 EPLD conference together with Sir William Dean in Australia.
The firs ELPD conference was co-sponsored by the Australian and New Zealand Commonwealth study Conferences Associations. A second conference is planned for either late 2009 or early 2010 but under the direction and drive of the PLF.
A Regional Board will be convened with a strong Pacific representation and will be the equivalent  of the Steering committee formed to oversight the staging of the EPLD 2009.
Samoa’s Board member is Brenda Heather –Latu who previously served as Attorney General and now in private practice.
Her membership reflects a strong commitment to the staging of the EPLD 2006 and future leadership mentoring ,
The invitation to the Head of State top become the patron of the PLF was tendered in late July 2008.
In choosing His Highness the PLF was mindful of the need to source a proven Pacific Leader for this role , moreover  a Pacific Leader with an elevated background, maintaining the long held tradition of royal patronage for Commonwealth  Leadership  Conferences.
The Head of State has had a distinguished career of public service following the examples provided holders of the royal paramount title  he currently occupies .
His Highness the Head of State now takes over from HRH Princess Anne of the United Kingdom who was the previous Patron of EPLD 2006.
