CLOSING IN : This was at the Mulinu'u Peninsula with the TAVA'ESINA in the lead as the SEGAVAO II was closing in fast.

HEY WATCH IT : Fetu O Le Moana about to ram the Tamarina  (red) in a tight run for the finishing line from the Mulinu'u Peninsula. Tamarina finished 5th and the Fetu O Le Moana 6th in the 10 boat race.

One of the best fautasi races seen along the waterfront of Apia in probably a decade and how it ended in controversy, kick started on Monday the activities of the weeklong celebration of the 17th Teuila Festival 2008.
The defending champion from Salua Manono, TAVA’ESINA, went home to celebrate a famous victory at the end of the early morning race only to learn shortly afterwards that the win was not theirs to celebrate.
The race officials declared the SEGAVAO II the winner by a mere tick of a second, in 39 minutes 53 seconds against 39 minutes 54 seconds for the TAVA’ESINA.
The time difference illustrated the thrill of a very tight race where the winner was decided on the line.
The TAVAE’ASINA however was left in shock and felt bitterly cheated out of a memorable win when they learned of the official outcome. (Read 2nd story).
The high drama of the opening event has heightened public expectations of tomorrow’s second race, which is generally regarded as the ‘scoop oar’ race.
The Thursday race will climax one of the two most popular events in the celebration of the Teuila Festival every year – the second is the Miss Samoa Beauty Pageant.
Samoa’s new beauty queen will be decided from the 9 contestants entered this year, including the three entries representing the Samoan communities in the United States, Australia and New Zealand.
The local beauty pageants have generated their share of high drama as well with this year not likely to be an exception as the overseas entries have already discovered, with the robust reaction of their home based supporters.
The girls are already going through their planned commitments for the week. They have been putting in special appearances around several planned outings to give them wider exposure to the public.
Decision day on Friday night is preceded by a floats parade along Beach Road for the contestants in the morning.
The announcing of the new Miss Samoa to replace the reigning Miss Sherry Elekana will wrap it up for the 2008 Teuila Festival.
