ON AIR : A happy opposition MP Lealailepule Rimoni Aiafi that Government has resurrected Radio 2AP.

The spokesman for newly named Tautua Samoa Party, MP Lealailepule Rimoni Aiafi, applauds the ‘resurrection‘ of Radio 2AP on Wednesday.
The Faleata I Sisifo MP and Chairman of the 12 member coalition of opposition parliamentarians of Tautua Samoa Party, fought against the privatization of the AM band radio station when it was brought up in Parliament a year ago.

“I spoke on the budget in 2007, about why Radio 2AP should remain a state service,” MP Lealailepule told Newsline yesterday.
“It is the only radio station with a full coverage of Samoa and also a cheaper source of information, affordable to everyone in the country.”
The TSP spokesman argued at the time that Radio 2AP is a vital service for the country in times of emergencies or natural disasters where the country has to be kept informed at all times.
“Commercial stations are likely to take their transmitting equipment down for safekeeping in times of cyclones, but Radio 2AP has that tall transmitting mast at Mulinuu designed to keep the station signal going in times of emergencies.
“The radio station carries important community programmes as well, that are necessary to inform and to educate at little cost to the public or what I referred to as affordable information.
“Coverage of Parliamentary proceedings or church services are also part of the functions they are there to provide to keep the country abreast of political and religious events.
“They also have archives of recorded events that are of historical significance and they could be put at risk in a commercial radio environment.”
The Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi vowed at the re-launching of the radio station this week that Government will keep a tight grip on it from here on.
Radio 2AP was initially offered up as part of the privatization media package that included the commercial station 89.1FM and the television station, that were all listed under the Samoa Broadcasting Corporation.
It was however returned to Government after the new private owners negotiated only for the purchase of the other two media services.
The public station is now added to the responsibility of the Ministry of Information and Communications, and was officially re-launched under its old Radio 2AP call sign by the Prime Minister.
“One of the points I raised with Government is that the station not only be kept as a state service but it should be restored to its old name Radio 2AP rather than 540 AM it was being referred to at the time,” Lealailepule reminded.
“ I am happy to see that done as well.”

Radio 2AP....the knowledge gateway that once fed the minds of many Samoans
written by JJ, July 13, 2008
This is absolutely great news for Samoa, and its' many dedicated young and mature listeners. My father (God bless his soul as he rests in peace) was a DJ on 2AP sometime ago (in the 60's), and I remember as a kid growing up in Paradise listening to him on the radio with such awe and excitement. Radio 2AP was my link to broader knowledge and the rest of the world.

They say that persistance will eventually pay off if you strongly believe in something for the common good of the many. Malo lava!!. JJ

P.S. I'm sure my father will be tuning in again for good ole times.
