Meeting Organisers (l-r) Alan Wakely, Taimalie Faalogo, Maauga Motu, Oliver Iosefa

A symposium to promote religious tolerance and also the relationship between the law and religion will be held today at the NUS Campus fale at Lepapaigalagala.
The Head of State, His Highness Tupua Tamasese Efi will deliver the official opening address.
Local Politicians, religious leaders, legal practitioners and also academics are expected to attend.
The symposium is a sister event of the International law and Religion Symposium held annually at Salt Lake City, in Utah, USA.
“Since not all the leaders of the pacific could make it to Utah, it was decided that there should be one held for the pacific Islands.
” A symposium had already been held in Vanuatu Monday this week and now it is Samoa’s turn,” says Mr Oliva Iosefa, one of the organisers.
The understanding between religion and culture, and also the relationship between the different religious groups in Samoa, is the main goal for today’s sharing.
“We also home to promote tolerance between ethnic groups especially as we are seeing many new ethnic groups that are entering Samoa.”

The objectives of this event include:
-Highlighting the politico-religious values that promote social cohesion.
- Examining the impediments to religious freedom and mutual respect in individual pacific countries.
- Better communication between religious communities and their political leaders.
- Promoting close dialogue between the different religious groups on issues that they jointly face.
- Examining the importance of inter-racial respect and dialogue.
Mr Taimalie Faalogo an organiser hopes that the symposium would promote an understanding and harmony between culture and religion, acceptance of this he believes would lead to economic prosperity for Samoa.
The symposium will also feature keynote speakers from the annual event held in Utah, these speakers are all academics with international expertise and skills in regards to matters of law.
Chief Justice Patu Falefatu Sapolu will be one of the local presenters.
The General Secretary of the National council of churches, Reverend Maauga F. Motu and the deputy Prime Minister Misa Telefoni are the others.
The co sponsors of this event include: The National University of Samoa, Government of Samoa, Auckland University, Brigham Young University, Samoa Council of Churches and Church Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Religious Harmony In samoa..WOW!
written by Plato, December 04, 2008
Excuse me for acting surprised, but really, I'm sooo relieved that a religious symposium does exist to promote religious tolerance. Being a member of the Latter Day Saint Faith and living in the U S, I was surprised that about 80% of Americans have not heard of the Latter Day Saints as evident in the last elections when Mitt Romney ran for the Republican nominee.. Half of Americans than have heard of the L D S faith believe we are a cult, thanks to the teachings of certain Southern Baptist Ministers through their ministries of HATE.
I am thankful and proud of our Samoan religious leaders for not following these so called CHRISTIAN PRETENDERS who through their radio ministries of LIES and Hate, are really spreading evil in the world..

Perhaps a Symposium in Iraq!
written by Pete, December 05, 2008
Since 2003, half of the estimated one million Iraqi Christians have left their homes because of the relentless attacks they have been facing from Islamic extremists. Many Christians have been killed in Iraq, including Christian leaders such as Chaldean Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho. The body of the archbishop was found in the city of Mosul after his abduction in February 2008.

Most recently, over 2,000 Christian families fled from the city of Mosul and more than a dozen were killed between September and November 2008. Christian homes and properties were destroyed. This latest wave of attacks took place following a demonstration that Christians staged opposing the removal of Article 50 from the Iraqi constitution. Article 50 provided a quota that allowed the Iraqi Christians to be represented in the country's parliament. Less than a third of these families had returned to their homes by November 20.
The perpetrators of the attacks warned the Christians to convert to Islam or pay the jizya tax which allows non-Muslims to live in Muslim countries, or leave the city or face death. This shows the Islamists' clear intention to either kill or expel Christians from the city of Mosul.

Despite such widespread and systematic attacks against Iraqi Christians, their plight has largely gone unnoticed by the international community.
is it right?

Is it right mr Moderator? look at how plato is bashing the baptist church and you are just sitting there doing nothing? or is it possible that you mr mod is plato at the same time? are you a mormon yourself? sole se fai faalelei, faaku lau kaavale i le nuetral ae aua le solomua ia oe le faaikuau.

I am not the moderator nor is he taking sides. I am not bashing any religion at all, I'm just stating the facts. Just because our faith have different views on the Trinity does not mean we are not Christians. I have never heard of any religion in Samoa denouncing another faith. Not until I moved to the U S did I start hearing on the Christian radio net work such trash. The Bible Answer man for instance, they are of the the SOUTHERN Baptist faith. Maybe this branch of the christian faith is the extreme radical side of it. They spend most of their time Bashing other religions especially the L D S church calling our faith a cult and not Christianity. I just hope that this kind of covert hateful preaching doesn't find its way to our peaceful christian churches in Samoa.
Have a wonderful season of good will Mr John Smith

Thanks if you ain't a moderator. You are saying that other religion
is a ministry of hate, they are christian pretenders, their radio ministry is of lies and hate and that they are spreading evil in the world. Are you sure these are not your own personal judgements?

The reason why other christian churches call Mormonism a cult is because the Jesus of Mormonism is not the same as the Jesus of Christianity.

The word Christian was first used at Antioch in the times of the Apostle Paul to label those who believed in the Jesus the christ that was God, was with God, created the universe, came in the flesh and lived among them, died and resurrected, ascended to heaven, sitting at the right hand of God the father as an intercessor for us all. There is no other way to God the father other than "FAITH IN THE FINISHED WORK of that Jesus Christ". There was no Mormonism at that time at Antioch let alone the world. The Jesus of Mormonism is different, he was a brother of Lucifer who climbed the ranks of the Godhead by hard work. This is why in the Mormon teaching, earning your way to heaven via hard work is also emphasized. The Christian bible teaches in the book of Ephesian when Paul wrote to that church at Ephesus and let me quote it in Samoan,

o le nei ua faaolaina i tatou i le alofa tunoa o keriso iesu, e le o na o galuega, i na nei mitamita se tasi

That is just one out of so many references in the bible pointing to what the christians believe. I mean those that believe in being saved by grace not by works.

Your Opinion
written by Plato, December 09, 2008
Mr Smith, MR Smith. I can tell that the gospel of hate has unfortunately devoured your soul. LOL I was hoping that this kind of covert hateful preaching won't reach Samoa. but I am sadden that I was wrong. First of all, who are you to tell me who my Jesus is? Like you have a monopoly on Christianity. I was hoping that other christian denominations would concentrate on their own teachings rather than trying to find faults in other religions that they know very little about. You think you know but you don't because if you did, you'd be a member of Jesus Christ's church. The very same church he established on earth over 2000 years ago.
The name "MORMON" is a nick name used in the 1830's used by people for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day saints. I can also quote lots of scriptures in the bible (that you probably won't understand)
that prove to you that believing alone will not save you. for one thing, When you say you believe, then you must DO everything that God expects of you. My faith and I am not in the business of disproving your faith.
We preach why we believe our faith and our Gospel is the same gospel Jesus Christ established here on earth. Yes sir, The same Jesus Christ you claim is the Same one who is the corner stone of our church.
If you understood the bible (like you think you do) you would believe that the Gospel of Jesus Christ (and the priesthood) was taken back to heaven when all the apostles were killed by non believers (like yourself) lol
thus the great famine on earth. not a famine for food and water, but for the Gospel. In 1830s this same Gospel was restored on earth, Yes Mark Luke and John brought the keys (priesthood) back so that the same authority given to the apostles by Jesus Christ to do his work on earth, was given to Joseph Smith and others by the laying of hands of Mark Luke and John.
So you see Mr John Smith, Looks like WE are the REAL Christians because Jesus Christ is the corner stone of our religion but, We will also accept you as Christians as long as you claim to be.
