PROCESSING : NZ Immigration Attache Rex Hesterman with senior assistant Ms. Patsy Ah Ching (inset) enlarged photo of processing computer inside NZ Immigration Office at the NZ High Commission.

The process of selecting 1,200 successful applicants wishing to migrate from Samoa to New Zealand under the Quota Scheme got underway yesterday.
The process was as simple as the New Zealand High Commissioner, Caroline Bilkey, pressing a computer button.
All registration numbers for the 17,500 applications received last April are now left up to the computer to make the selection.
The final list of who gets to go should be ready by Friday for staff checking and verification, before it is released ‘early next week.’
“The 2008/2009 quota opened for registrations on 1 April 2008 and closed on 30 April 2008,” says New Zealand Immigration Attaché, Rex Hesterman, at the start of the selection process yesterday.

“There are of course many many people who have been entered into the ballot this year than there are places available…. around 16,000 people will miss out.”
“There are 8381 people in the ballot this year who had applied in previous years and there are 9174 first time applicants in the ballot this year.
There were 1152 people who failed the registration process for reasons such as they were too old (max age limit of 45) or they were too young (min. age limit of 18) or they did not sign their application forms or did not provide birth certificates, marriage certificates.
“Last year there were 18,941 people registered in the ballot and this year that number has dropped by around 8%to 17,556 people. At this stage I do not have specific data providing me with a breakdown of applicants but a possible contributing factor to the lower numbers this year could be due to there being less family units applying, compared to previous years, and more single applicants than previous years. It is clear however that interest by the people of Samoa in the Samoan Quota is still very high this year.”
Lucky applicants will have 6 months to get their immigration papers in order for processing before the 9 of January deadline.

I try not 2 generalise because like my parents there are plenty of hardworking, law abiding Samoans who take pride in their appearance.

However, to be brutally honest ... I feel that as a kiwi born samoan the quota is too high! We already have plenty of samoans here in NZ .. why do we need another 1000 each year??

I was born and raised in Otara ...and believe it or not, Otara was once a nice place to live and shop.
Now I would rather waste gas and shop elsewhere then go to Otara Shopping centre and see all the dirty, disgusting Samoans who look as if they just woke up, grabbed some ugly ie lavalava, didn't change their shirt, forgot to comb their hair and put on a bra!!! I am totally embarrassed and disgusted by them. You can tell the samoans from our other polynesian neighbours. My husband who is non samoan even comments saying 'you can tell the samoans' ... they look like they just came out of a bush! And then you see the news and half the criminals are samoan born!

I say, shut the borders! we have enough polynesians here to last a lifetime. I know this will offend some ...but it doesn't matter, because this is my opinion and point of view and if you don't like it tell someone who cares.

Truth hurts!

Hey I think you ought to go back and look at the real reason why NZ government initialize the Quota. Its because they robbed Samoans of their right to Citizensgip under British rule. So for you to say the border should be closed is a statement from a fia palagi Samoa. Samoans should travel free to NZ due to their status as British subjects but NZ changed it when they see Samoans will take over their land... fa laia...
