PM Tuilaepa unmovable in RHD controversy

Right or wrong the Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malieletgaoi is mindful of the RHD protesters freedom of expression, when they march on Monday to Parliament.

In an interview on national television last night, he welcomed the criticism by protesters as all part of the democratic process .

“It is actually good because this kind of support is necessary for building a stronger democracy,” PM Tuilaepa said.

The Parliamentary Committee  reviewing the RHD  Bill is in Savaii this week to hear views and opinions from the people on the main island.

Public reaction from those who have so far  made representation before the committee is mixed.

Supporters on both sides are echoing established argument lines on the controversial issue.

PM Tuilaepa Sailele continues to argue the case of the poor rather than the rich in Samoa benefiting from the switch to the right hand side of the road.

Government is hard pressed however to explain the immunity clause on the bill that lets them off the legal hook from any claims of damages when the road switch is in place.

This is really getting out of control,I thought the government is made out of people and these leaders of SAMOA should respect the wishes of our people,I think majority of people is still remaining the same from the beginning of this issue.I live in Hawaii with my family and it's irritated when something like this is been going on for such a long time without a peaceful solution. Our leaders should really look deep into this RHD or LHD,as for our prime minister, don't forget that you are also elected into office and I hope that this will influence the mind of your district for the up the coming elction again.E sa'o lelei lava le upu a leisi toeaina matua o le matou nu'u,"O LE POLOKIKI O LE POLO E KIKI"e kiki lava se'ia o'o lava na pa...O le tatou minisita e le'o se tagata fautuaina, aisea o le a toe suia ai le mea o lo'o tele atu ai tupe mo le malo o Samoa aua le tiuteina o ta'avale e avatu i fafo i hawaii ma amerika,ia o ai na iai i na mea po'o iai fo'i ni mea fa'alilolilo o fai i lalo o le laulau ha ha ha. manuia le fa'afofoaga samoa atoa, tatou lafo tasi ia i le atua le tatou manaoga o le tatou fesoasoani sili lena,ae tu'u ai pea le au fai mea pi'opi'o ia aua o le taui lava o le nu'u o ilo......D.Tuigamala

Calm down

Where in the story does it say this? It is this type of emotional claptrap that PASS is fuelling that is not really helpful to the debate. Anti-RHD supporters (by no means the majority of the country as reported ad nauseum by the biased media) need to calm the hell down.

This "1.5 billion" dollar "loss" to the economy is purely and simply the re-sale values of depreciated LHD vehicles. That is it. Why would these so-called business people buy a vehicle just re-sell it to another poor sucker at a reduced but still very high price? It tells me that the the guy didn't want to buy the vehicle to keep in the first place, but just to keep the prices for vehicles artifically high. That shuts out most people from kua from entering the market.

Good on you Prime Minister. I support your efforts to even out the playing field and looking out for the poorer people of our country.

Support? Yeah right.

Why has the large Ferry from Savaii (Lady Samoa) been scheduled for maintenance on Monday? When it's usually Tuesdays? Scared of all the protesters coming from the big island?
Police have been seen taking down the NO TO RHD SWITCH signs/crosses. Why???

Talofa, I have read some of the comments and would like to help you (olo) understand the issue more clearly by directing you to the PASS Committee website www.passkomiti.ws where you can read the IPES submission and verify what constitutes the 1.5 billon dollar COST!

Arrogance against the WILL of the people.
written by Albert m. To'o, April 16, 2008
I am very disturbed by the unfading position of govermrnt to consider the concern of the general public regarding the RHD switch policy. People from all walks of life, the young and the old, the rich and the poor, the educated and the layman on the street have protested, marched and voiced strong opinions about the impact of the RHD switch to the public safety and well being. Yet, the PM is unyieling and unmoved but continue to push his poors' benefit from it...WHAT NONSENSE!

The ARROGANCE protrayed by the PM shouldn't be tolerated at any stretch of the imagination...he works for the people who put him there in the first palce. No matter how strong his conviction about the RHD policy, the people have spoken and he should LISTEN, not being steadfast stubborn and act like a dictator. Otherwise all this talk about democracy is nothing but a bunch of BULL...remember Abraham Lincoln "Government is the people...." not him and his cronies in parliament.

God Bless SAMOA,

ALbert M. To'o
I read the CoC submission and am not impre
written by Olo, April 16, 2008
For all the so-called 'facts' and 'figures', the CoC submission actually doesn't produce any evidence to LINK the so-called dangers to safety and driving on the left-hand side of the road with RHD cars. Given that this is the constitutional right that PASS is saying is being infringed (Article 5 - Right not to be deprived of life), it is surprising how little "facts" and "figures" are produced to say that if we switch to RHD, we can expect X number of people to die on the roads directly as a result of 'blindspot' issues to do with LHD cars driving on hte left hand side of the road. The submission was relying on heresay and assumptions that people will die. Well, as the saying goes, assumptions make an Ass (donkey) of you and I.

It is also hilarious how the legal action will be based totally on Article 5. It is ridiculous that article 5 will be infringed because there is simply no evidence to support the assumption that people will die because of RHD. People die because of drink-driving, speeding, taking the eyes off the road to text or argue or whatever, but very very little because they were simply driving on one side of the road. Road-users must concentrate totally on what is in front of them. If they do, nothing should go wrong. Even if children come out of nowhere and run across the road. If they aren't concentrating and driving to the conditions, then their negligence level rises and things could go wrong. Samoans who come to NZ and drive on the "wrong" side of the road don't crash because of their habits of a lifetime. They crash because they drink then drive, or because they are speeding. In Sweden, when they switched, crashes actually went down because everyone took extra caution on the roads. Sweden has thousands more cars on their roads then Samoa.

It is also interesting there is NOTHING in the constitution which protects the re-sale values of depreciating vehicles - which is the main gripe of PASS people - money, money, money. The constitution does not protect depreciating vehicles. So, constitutionally, the argument that this is undemocratic and dictatorial is wide of the mark.

Olo, you have the cart before the horse.

Please present figures and facts on the benefits of the switch and then you can comment on the figures presented against.

What do you expect if things are done in a rush?? If the PM and the Human Rights Provocative Party didn't try to pass this piece of rubbish I mean bill in such a short time without consulting the people first via a referendum, I think the PASS people would have been able to satisfy your desire for facts. What I sense in what you wrote is that you are after a research by the PASS that reveals the IQs of people, their blood presssure, their knowing left from right, their eating habits etc.

You are right, people would take extra care when we are in a new situation on the road, but IPES and others have brought their estimate of the cost of a change to the table. Apart from the financial costs, the head ache costs is just too much, it would probably take a whole year or more for people to get use to such head aches on the daily basis. What about people laughing at us having most of the cars as LHDs and driving on the wrong side of the road? There is no good governance being revealed in this whole scenerio called "haste or rush" into passing this HRPP Right Hand Dumb bill, it is what you do to little children who are yet to know how to think for themselves .
