Catholic Schools from around Samoa will be gathering this morning at the Marist Grounds Mulivai, for a special celebration of the Holy Mass.

According to the Private Secretary of the Catholic Archbishop, Father Spartz Silva the Mass was initiated by Church authorities in an attempt to instill peace and harmony within schools.

“We (Catholic Schools) have also sent an invitation to Avele College and Leifiifi College and we are happy to know that representatives from these two schools will be attending the mass,” says Father Spartz.

Father Spartz adds that there is hope the mass will spark a sense of reconciliation amongst schools and that this would provide peace and harmony amongst the students.

Father Spartz believes that there needs to be more programs like these where students come together, but with greater involvement from Priests, parents and the Catechist.

Father Spartz also stated that there needs to be more programs implemented for all schools and that the idea of unity instead of violence and competitiveness should be promoted.

“We (Catholic Schools) do not want the Government to suspend sports completely, however, we want to teach the students gospel values and that it is not about winning but rather coming together in the spirit of harmony.”

Father Spartz says that the Catholic Schools have 3-4 combined gatherings every year including a Youth Week, and these events have always been special and promote unity.

Father Spartz however stated that this is the Mass was initiated as to help schools stay away from fighting and violence.

This mass will also be praying for the welfare of Francella Tuala who was a victim of attack during the school brawls.

The Mass begins today at 8:30am and will be attended by the Head of State, His Highness Tuiatua Tupua Tamasese Efi, Cabinet Ministers, and will be conducted by the Archbishop, Moseniolo Alapati Mataeliga.

Faith without work is dead!
written by Jack, May 05, 2008
I hate to be negative but I think calling for a mass prayer after the fact is unneccessary and it is for show only. I know a lot of people will hate me for saying this but everytime something happen people gathered and pray, not for thanks giving but for help and healing. This is a typical reaction to our human race when we get in trouble. We do not remember God until we are in need. E mu loa le lima tapa i le iaofi. God will answer our prayers when we do all we can first and rely on Him for the rest. We can not ask God to give us daily bread when we do not work, farm or even get out of the house and do something to earn that bread. The question is why St Jo, Avele and Don Bosco always a problem every year in school sport evens? I think the problem starts from the top...government schools (government at fault), church schools (church at fault) and private schools (sponsor at fault). All these government and organizations need to revamp their leadereship positions and curriculums...maybe teaching more about respect and honor instead of pride and mimita. Faith without work is dead!
