Assistant CEO Tupuola Misi,Transport Division of the Ministry of Works

The gradual buildup of community awareness for the new changes to be enforced in the switch to right hand drive vehicles, has made a start with selected church communities, along the west coast of Apia.
This was confirmed from the Transport Division of the Ministry of Works yesterday.
The head of the division, Assistant CEO Tupuola Misi, told Newsline that they had already responded to an invitation from the appointed elder of the Malua i Sisifo district, of the Congregational Christian Church of Samoa, CCCS.
Tupuola said the division road safety programme was carried out for CCCS congregations included in the church district from the village of Saleimoa up to Faleula.
“We are already planning a media awareness programme to start in a few weeks time, for television and newspapers, to prepare the public for the incoming changes when we switch sides of the road,” Tupuola told Newsline.
Schools is one of the key target areas, but it is being put on hold for now until after the holiday break starting after today for most of the schools in the country.
The planned public awareness effort will also include driving practices for the public inside the safety of the roads at the Faleata Sporting complex.
Tupuola added that they will start stepping up their awareness campaign in July at the start of the new budget year for 2008/2009.
“ By August this year, we should be in Savai’i to continue with our road safety programme visits to schools and villages.”
Tupuola also confirmed that of the 78 new right hand drive vehicles that have already been registered from February to the end of April, 7 were taxis.
He did not have the figures for older RHD cars that were re-licensed during the annual registration of all vehicles in the country a few weeks ago.
The Transport Control Board meanwhile, is yet to finalise plans for the conversion of left hand drive busses and vans that opens out to the middle of the road, when the road switch comes into effect in the latter half of next year.
“All our awareness planning are scheduled up to the end of this year, we have as yet to plan for 2009.”
