Red Cross Volunteers appealing for help in the centre of Apia

The Samoa Red Cross has started an appeal to help victims of the Myanmar Cyclone in Burma.
Vicious winds has already claimed a quarter of a million lives in the country, almost the equivalent of half of Samoa’s population, with the death toll still on the rise.
The Samoa Red Cross are organizing their fundraising drive in front of the Government Building, asking the public to make donations to a good cause.
“Help the victims of the cyclone in Burma” came the calls over the microphone, by Red Cross Field Officer Samoa Lapa Tofilau.
Tofilau told  Newsline that Red Cross Samoa holds an appeal to contribute aid to any country that is seriously affected by natural disasters.
“The last time we had an appeal was for the victims of the tsunami in the Solomon Islands.” said Mr.Tofilau.
The Solomon Island’s appeal took a long time to organize compared to the Burma appeal, according to Mr.Tofilau.
The appeal will start collecting donations from the public this week and will continue on to the weekend.
Samoa is one of the many countries helping out through charities and international aid for the people of Burma.
“Cyclone Nargis has devastated many parts of Rangoon, Burma’s largest city, as well as the populated ,low land areas of the Delta region.
The most recent reports claim the death toll may exceed 20,000 and early reports believe tens of  thousands more have been left homeless after 120 mph winds and pounding rain wreaked havoc on the city of already substandard housing, poor sewage and limited infrastructure” reports the Foundation for the people of  Burma website.
