The People Against Switching Sides (PASS) Committee held a Public Meeting for Savaii residents this morning at the Eva Eva Club in Salelologa.
The purpose of the meeting was to increase public awareness and to provide an avenue for members of the general public to voice their views and concerns on Government’s decision to change the side of the road on which vehicles travel in Samoa.
The meeting opened with a prayer service by Reverend Reupena Asiata. The Church Minister preached extensively about the value of life as a God given gift for all, not to be wasted or placed in unnecessary harm or danger.
The proceedings were led by high chiefs of Salelologa, Savaii, Pauli Apelu and Matamua Tautua. PASS Committee Chairman Toleafoa Solomona Toailoa gave an opening address to outline the issues before handing the discussion over to the people of Savaii, to express their views.
The meeting was attended by over 100 matais of Savaii with most districts of Savaii well represented. The voice of the people of Savaii was clear – they are dead against the switch. The feedback was very emotional, with every speaker raising issues of concern about road safety and the likelihood of people dying as a result of unsafe roads. An alarming number of speakers spoke frankly about the process of democracy and good governance, with the view that government leaders no longer respected the voice of the people, and no longer cared to heed their advice.
Pauli Asora of Salelologa expressed concerns that the Prime Minister led the nation as he would direct his own children. “He talks down on us, like he’s speaking to his own kids.”
This was echoed by a comment by Fili Iulia of Malaesuatia, Sili who felt that political agendas were clouding the government’s vision and making them unable to love the people, as he quoted in Samoan, “E poto e faatalofa, ae valea e alofa”. He also asked the question, “Why can’t the government be sued?”
Utuallii Ave of Faga used the example of banning cartons of herring to make the point that decisions which are supposed to help people, only end up making life more difficult and more costly for people.
Toala Faafoi of Sili was concerned about the immunity clause being included in the Bill, and wanted to have the right to sue the government if a member of his family were to incur injuries from an accident pertaining to the switch. He requested the media to air the comments of Toleafoa over the television for all to see and become aware of the issues.
Matamua Tautua of Salelologa said that the Puleono of Salafai were definitely not in support of the government’s decision. “The correct are not learned, and the learned are not correct.” E sa’o ae le a’o, e a’o foi ae le sa’o. Using this to express his views of premature government decisions based on political issues which have now ignored the needs of the people.
An elderly mother, Faamuli of Palauli pleaded for peace and safety in Samoa and did not want her children exposed to unsafe roads.
Seumanu Potu, an elderly high chief, thanked Toleafoa, PASS committee chairman for giving such a clear explanation of the issues since there had been considerable misinformation and confusion about what PASS was trying to achieve and what the implications were if the Bill was made law.
The meeting ended with the formation of PASS Savaii – a committee of Savaii Matais who will take the move forward. They proposed a series of village-based seminars to be conducted throughout Savaii to further clarify the issues, and for residents to adopt whatever measures they feel appropriate to stop the adoption of the Bill.
The meeting was covered by TV3 and Triangle TV. Members of the government newspaper, Savali, were also present.

Was there ever such a public/community meeting calling views of people by the government? Answer no! Government set up subcommittees to sit as kings in air-condition rooms where people are asked to come and see them if they have any issue on proposed policies/legislations etc.
It is really an eye opener for the government because as one poor Pauli Asora said, the PM demanded them like his own children. If government is sincere about transparency and accountability, then consult the poor people in the village, the way PASS went about doing their business...
Good on you PASS. Samoa really needs a full over-haul of its systems. Keep the pressure on.
Savaii Dead Set Against Switching Sides written by anonymous,

I am completely not sure which way this government is taking Samoa, it should be noted that most western countries have limitations so that the people who govern and represent their constituents do not have term like that of a ruler, i.e. Fidel Castro, Stalin, and numerous other's i think the Honorable Prime Minister should step down, Samoa needs a change but not from LHD to RHD...it seems that if this law which benefits those who can afford it, i.e. polititcians than it SHOULD NOT PASS...but because Samoa has been ruled by the PM for many years who's to stop him now...the Head of State..?....government terms should be restricted there is a reason in the U.S. u can only be president for two terms = 8 years... can u imagine george bush president for maybe 16 years well he might change us to drive on the opposite side...i think that it would be close to impossible for Samoans in NZ to send cars over with the stipulation that the government is asking for...but i guess it would be if u were a figure head huh...

This law , as stated by many of the people in Samoa, will move Samoa back in time. It has now moved forward into a more developed country, but this move will reverse what so many family's that have lived in Samoa for years and strived to achieve..familys once poor now grasping a little business..finally a middle class being developed in Samoa . the recent Chinese SAT loan for $100 million makes me think the chinese are now owning a percentage of Samoa's investments or the land itself. im curious whether after the PM attending the Kyoto conference on global warming whether comments from his speech being that Samoa will work together to reduce emissions and do it's part in slowing down global warming is where this switch comes from...further more Samoa being an "underdeveloped country" whether any financial assistance was offered by another country at Kyoto this could explain why this whole issue does not matter how unpopular to the people that REALLY affected by it this question now becomes not a question of if but when....?... And if there was financial assistance why wasn't it disclosed?... Sounds like somebody at the conference said yeh i can reduce the numbers but my country is poor so were gona need some money sign me a check....ok dont worry ill make sure that this time two years it will look better on that report.that will mean that ur doing ur job and u can keep it.......we support the government, when it serves the people , the right to choice .....

Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this issue, switch and/or the pass position on this important issue. First I have not seen or read any type of research by the government to support it's position or switch side will save human lives. Based on what I heard from Samoan on the military and, of course, this is secondary information, Germany has one of the highest dead rate in the world because they drive on the opposite side from what Samoa and other civilized countries in the world are accostomed to. Secondly, I would like to know the main purpose or rational behind the government interest on why the switch is needed.
