(Sisters in a container) The Container arriving in Samoa, happy recepients.

A 20 foot container loaded with equipment has arrived in Apia to help the Old Peoples home in Mapuifagalele – run by the “Little Sisters of the Poor”
The equipment supplied includes hospital beds, hospital mattresses, wheelchairs, shower and toilet chairs, walkers, adult diapers, bedding, crutches, chairs, shelving and books.
Currently the Old Peoples home can only accommodate 50 people, because of bed shortages, but has capacity for 60 residents. There are 34 full time staff and many volunteers to look after the residents.
This project was prompted by a visit last year of Auckland Rotarians Ralph and Anne Cooney to Samoa. After a visit with Peter Bendinelli from the Rotary Club of Apia, to the little Sisters of the Poor at Mapuifagalele, they decided to seek help.

Ralph approached Roger Harvey, Director of World Community Services at his Rotary Club of Newmarket. The club decided to help and Roger and his committee set about sourcing the equipment, adult diapers and arranging the storage containers and then the shipment.
The major donors are the Malo family. Ann and Jason Malo have spent 10 years collecting used medical equipment for the islands, and raising money to help with extra supplies and shipping. Roger, Ann & Jason shipped the 1st convoy of goods in November. This was added to by Mathew Latour and members of the Rotary Club of Newmarket. Anne Cooney’s Rotary Club of Mt Eden assisted with some of the funding for Adult Diapers and with packing of the container.
