A seventeen year old female of Falefa died as a result of suicide last weekend.
She was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital.

Dr. Penehuro Tapelu, who was on duty when the girl arrived, confirmed it was suicide and that she died before arriving to the hospital.

Sources told Newsline that the girl was found by a relative at 12 pm and that the seventeen year old died by hanging.

The source could not confirm any reason or motive behind the girl’s suicide, but Dr. Tapelu did confirm that a post mortem is now being carried out.

This is the fifth case of suicide since the beginning of this year, according to Executive and Clinical Director of Faataua Le Ola (FLO) Ms. Ofeira Salevao

Salevao adds that since 2004 there have been suicide victims from the village of Falefa, “in 2007, three people from the village of Falefa attempted suicide,” says Salevao.

Salevao says that suicide is not one family’s problem and that village authorities and those that build up spiritual values within village communities should take this matter into serious consideration.

“There is obviously a problem with Falefa regarding suicide, there is always a suicide victim from this village, we did try to run an intervention and prevention program in the village,” Salevao said.

Is this the only outlet for the young....suicide or rioting?....The nucleus of our being is our family(Aiga), Church and then our Community. If these 3 support groups fail the young people, what can be expected from the police and government?

Is this the only outlet for the young....suicide or rioting?....

It's a pity kids and teens studying, reading books, playing marbles, igavea and tiddlywinks dont get much sensationalized press time which appeals to our emotions that enables those faulty conclusions.
