Gisa Fuata’i Purcell (2nd from right) with the remainder of Tugaga Atoa family clan left to make the return trip to their respective countries of residence at the end of the family reunion in Samoa.

The Tugaga Atoa Family have much to celebrate in the week spend in Apia when they flocked to the Tofamamao at Leauva’a for their 9th reunion since it all started back in 1983.
“We hold our family reunion every 3 years and we’ve never missed having one since we started,” family spokesperson, Gisa Ms. Fuata’i Purcell, explained.
‘We’ve probably held our reunions more often and for the longest time than any other family I suppose.”
Another established tradition for the Tugaga Atoa family reunion is the hosting of every second reunion outside Samoa.
Members of the clan are spread as far as Hawaii, mainland USA, American Samoa, Australia and New Zealand and it was felt that they should spread the hosting responsibilities around.
All have at one time or another taken their turn hosting the family members and according to Ms. Purcell a location for the next reunion is set.
“Our 10th reunion in 3 years time is now set for Hawaii. The choice of location was put to the vote and it looks like we’ll all be gathering in Hawaii next.”
The activities  range from the fun of holding games and other light hearted events, to the serious stuff where the elders emphasise the values of respect and unity in the family.
The Tugaga Atoa family has its roots in Savai’i at the village of Faletagaloa at Safune.
The family roots extend to Tuaefu in Upolu, the site of their biggest family project , the Tuaefu Methodist Church.
Most of the visiting members of the family have since returned to Australia, Zealand and American Samoa. Those left behind are from the mainland United States,  due to fly out this week .
“ They’ll be flying out to Los Angeles, Utah, Virgina and Alaska.”
Family Reunions are popular activities with the families in Samoa and most schedule them around the holiday season at the end of the year for the Xmas and New Year break.
