WCC General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia

World Council of Churches Denounce Charismatic Evangelizing Designed To Entice Followers Away From Main Stream Churches

Hyped up preaching believed popular with emerging denominations in Samoa, was denounced this week by the leader of the powerful, World Council of Churches, WCC, in a meeting with the local media on Monday.
The WCC General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia, who visited Samoa at the start of the week, admonished as not acceptable, the charismatic evangelizing that deliberately target worshippers from mainstream churches.
“There is nothing wrong with charismatic evangelizing like what the Pentecostal and the Baptist churches are doing, unless it is used as bait to win over the followers of main stream churches,” Rev. Kobia reasoned, in response to the growing appeal of charismatic religion.
The General Secretary led a WCC delegation visit to Samoa in a sweep through Tahiti and Fiji, 'to highlight solidarity and support with member churches, and to provide a platform to listen to their concerns and issues.’
Rev. Dr. Kobia noted that ‘flock pinching’ is a trend that is happening not just in the Pacific but also in the whole world.
“Charismatic evangelizing targets the young people and when you take them away it will weaken the future of that church.”
He was however under standing about the reasons behind the young people becoming attracted to the rival churches.
“Let’s face it, mainstream churches are boring and if they are concerned about losing the younger members of the congregation, they too should do something to hold their interest.”
Rev. Kobia believed that the situation is a matter for the churches themselves to handle and urged that the solution lies with the churches themselves.
The Congregational Christian Church of Samoa, CCCS, and the Methodist Church are members of the WCC and as mainstream denominations in Samoa, they are perceived to be the ones most affected.
CCCS Secretary Rev. Dr. Iutisone Salevao, is uncertain about claims of the denomination flocking over to the opposition.
“I’m not aware of any survey carried out to support the claims, so it is difficult to make any comments about it,” he pointed out.
“We have to be careful about making generalizations that are not supported by facts, because some of the comments are silly really.”
Rev. Salevao did admit however to the influence of market forces on religion, where the bottom line is the number of people who belong to a particular denomination.
The Geneva, Switzerland based WCC brings together close to 350 churches in more than 110 countries and territories throughout the world.
The religious body represents up to 560 million Christians throughout the world.
Rev. Dr. Kobia is the third WCC General Secretary to visit Samoa since 1992.  While in Apia he and his delegation paid a courtesy call on the Head of State, His Highness Tupua Tamasese Efi.
The WCC leader and his delegation left on Monday night,

talofa i si ou pogisa Dr!!!!!!!

The charismatic movement is doing exactly what the early have done. People like Wesley, Finney, and many others. Let's put it into perspective by saying, that the charismatic churches are growing "grass" in their fields and do not ban any sheep that is hungry. I am sorry but if Rev Dr would start encouraging the ministers of his group to have intimate relationships with Christ, then thier preachings would have much more effect on people hence their church members would increase as well. It is not the methods of evangelism that bring results but it's people being attracted by lord himself to himself. NO ONE COMES TO THE FATHER UNLESS HE IS DRAWN BY THE FATHER HIMSELF. Rev Dr's comments is an old excuse which is actually the "mind" trying to figure out why on earth people leave their churches. Unbeknown to him, people will leave if there is lack of spirituality in an organisation. Those who are hunger and thirst for righteousness should be fed
Argument Baseless and Out of Touch with Reality

The WCC as an Organization see's Evangelicals as a threat? Is this General Secretay off his rockers?
What part of the statement did this GS just made that does not make logical sense?

Why Evangelicals Mr. General Secretary? The Fear is based on WCC challenged or the preaching and the leader makes no distinction between morality and culture.

Find me a Preacher that tells the truth as the Gospel tells, I' ll be the first in the church.

The claims made by this GS is out of touch-- with society as a whole. This is the reform of Reformation churches afraid of its own.... Unbelievable!

Gen. Secretary Rev Dr...wearing blinkers no doubt.....take them off & lo & behold there's the worship centre...the aog is in abundance....bahai.....islam.....surely there are others?! Do we need a survey?
where did all these other 'churches' spring from...dissatisfaction with the mainstream me finks. It's typical of religious leaders to hide behind ancient & translated texts etc etc.
It's frightening when the young join a cult-like assembly because of disenchantment with primary religion....and one can't blame them...have u seen/met some of these pompous self important people representing the humble Christ!?
Religion has become very self serving & parental responsibility is merely to guide and have faith that the young have their own lifes to live. After all we were all created in the image of God? 'My religion is simple....my religion is kindness'

ok ok... there's no need to hate on any religions.... smilies/grin.gif smilies/grin.gif smilies/grin.gif
I've been to a few religions from when I was brought into this world...
1-5yrs Morman
8-12yrs Assembly
13-14yrs old No church
15-17 Methodist
18-21yrs old no church
22-26yrs Assembly
27 (current) new convert to EFKS.....
The thing I found was that the more traditional churches EFKS preach the word directly, no wasting time and keep to the point.
Assembly tho'... is more hip, fun, and people are generally laid back... for the youth i guess....
DONT GET ME WRONG... I enjoyed my time at Assembly bcos I used to sing in the band, and it gave me the feeling of the Holy Spirit, when I sing dance etc....
The only reason Im switching to EFKS is bcos my mother's family are all EFKS, Im about to be married to a EFKS guy who comes from a devout EFKS family ..so kinda had no choice... lol
I miss singing in the band, i miss dancing and being vocal with praises.... Im still trying to get used to my new religion... I guess these 2 religions are totally different, but serve the same purpose and the same God... isnt that what matters?

Well I can say that new convert above is right in her comment.... We all worship the same God!!! Some people enjoy more traditional approaches to worship and other prefer a lively worship atmosphere as has been expressed by new convert above.

All my life I have been Samoan AOG and it can seem that we do enjoy taking people from other churches as we claim that the Holy Spirit is only alive and well in our churches. However that can not be the case, the Bible does not state that God and the Holy Spirit only exist in one church. Sheep stealing is the issue and I know from my own experience in Church that we do enjoy steeling sheep from other traditional denominations such as Methodist, EFKS, Mormons and SDA to name a few.

Maybe what the WCC is saying could be correct. If we tried to take in all the people that dont know Christ into our churches than we will be able to make a strong impact on the world. I have heard constantly in Sermons from my church that people of the traditional churches dont know God like we do, but that can not be the case....

I do hope that our focus can be on those who do not know Christ rather than those who are already members of other traditional denominations.

Well God be with you all....

The Very Reason You Should Not Follow a Man----
written by know your sheeps, July 24, 2008
too many people are into worshiping charismatic leaders and not understanding the gospel as written
follow the bible, not the man, not the church--

you got a preacher that does not follow than you got problems
preachers life should reflect what he preaches to a greater degree than ever
For God's sake, hold church leaders accountable for their actions and words

the statement this fella makes is predictable, but also disturbing

remember this statement by Jesus-- My Sheep Knows me and I my Sheep. They hear my voice and they come to me---

Dissect the statements of Jesus versus statements of this General Secretary--

This GS is afraid folks will suddenly flock away from HIS church. It was never HIS church to begin with and if folks have flocked away, it means he is not preaching right, not living right and truthfully, not telling the truth

I hate Preachers that do not follow the Teachings of Jesus-- I just do, it makes no sense to me, why should it make sense to you--

Just my Opinion---

While new convert is clear by confirming her leaving the AOG (after years of not having an intimate relationship with Jesus) where she was simply led by her feelings, she is also implying that she is now led to the place where she has found Mr Right. In Samoan, ua sulu lava i le mea ua maua ai le mea mama LOL.
Old AOG boy seems so be confirming his being lost just like the Rev DR blackie up there. I won't be surprise if he is a new victim of modern theology ha ha ha

I've been in the pentecostal and evangelical denominations and their sermons are quite lively, but there is always a dig at the other "mainstream" churches for not being devout and fundamentalist enough. There is always a special dig at the Catholic church lol The Anglican church here in NZ gets special spite for being 'too worldly'. That is what put me off those evangelical churches. They seem to want to always put down other denominations as a way of ensuring their flock that they are at the right church.

lol

Its intersting that you leave no opinion of your own, just like the luke warm fence sitters Jesus talks about.... But by the way you speak I can tell you are just one of those fundementalist conservative idiots that I am surrounded by in Church...
Do you deny that Jesus came for all? that all Christians worship the same God? Maybe you are lost and not anyone else. No wonder why people in our church are accused for being so self rightous... Thank God, Jesus was not self rightious like you and the many people in our churches....
Well if I am lost like what you said, at least I have the comfort in knowing Jesus came for the lost and not the self rightious... Ill be praying and fasting for you telling....

God Bless....
LOL

Dear Tell (Part One)

Thank you once again for showing Samoa how small minded you are, and also how racist you are by referring to the Rev Dr as 'Blackie.' Great to see how you show through your words the 'love' of Christ through what you say... (Wonderful example of what being ‘saved’ means) No wonder why people above do not have good things to say about our church....

(Part two)
If you are the example of a person who has given their life to Jesus than I don’t know what Bible you read... But like I said in the previous post, if Christ came for the LOST then I am in the right place...Pity you already know it... 'Renounce modern theology' well where did you hear that from, the same broken records our pastors preach!!! What a shame your so brain washed.......
