Young and old came together yesterday when the folks at the Mapuifagalele Home for the aged, were pleasantly interrupted from their normal activities, by the visiting staff of Western Union and their children.
The leading money transfer company in Samoa presented the sisters and the elderly with early Christmas gifts, as part of an annual goodwill gesture that started 5 years ago.
The presentation started with the kids all getting up in a line to meet with the residents and the sisters.
The visitors went on to entertain with songs and dances for the elderly, before handing out gifts, which included flashlights with built in radioes.
A Western Union cheque for three thousand tala was presented as the highlight of the visit, and was gratefully accepted by Sister Maria Elisapeta .
“We are very happy and appreciative of these gifts and also the items that the kids performed, we are very glad,” Sister Elisapeti said,
The elderly showed their appreciation by singing a song and elderly Fale Leo on behalf of the residents thanked Western Union for the gifts and items, “ Thank you and may God bless you for your kindness that you have shown today…”

Western Union Assistant General Manager Ms.Anarosa Molio’o said that this annual event was done so that the children of the staff would learn to appreciate and respect their elders.
She said that the presentation this year was based on the Catholic Church theme which was dedicated to the old people.
“The value of what was presented today was between six and seven thousand tala, this was funded by Western Union’s own social committee and also money given by the office”.
In keeping with the its annual commitment the Western Union treated the children afterwards, to a movie before taking them for lunch at McDonalds and afterwards to the Faleata Sports complex for fun and games with their parents.
