Whirlwind Rise For Elected CCCS Leader

NEW CHURCH LEADER : New Chairman of the Congregational Christian Church, Rev. Tavita Roma, being congratulated at the end of the Malua conference on Friday. When the Rev. Tavita Roma turned up at the start of the annual general conference of the Congregational Christian Church of Samoa, CCCS, he never thought he would become the centre of attention in the largest denomination in Samoa. But the Lord he has dedicated his life to, was about to work His mysterious will on him. It started when the conference delegates elected a deputy chairman, and he was the chosen one. A few days later, Rev. Roma found himself elevated once again to the very top of the leadership ladder when he stepped up to be the Chairman in place of the outgoing incumbent, Rev. Esekielu Situfu Tanielu. The transition from Deputy Chairman to Chairman was a whirlwind affair that was a rarity in the history of succession for the CCCS leadership role. By last Friday, Rev. Roma, stepped up to take over the seat as leader of the church until the next annual general conference comes around once again, this same time next year. “I have served the church for 30 years and I never expected to be in this position I am in now,” Rev. Roma told Newsline at the end of the annual conference on Friday. “It was never my wish, I just happened to be here but I hope to be a responsible Chairman of the Church,” he reflected. The new Chairman came across as a very reserved person, with short and succinct responses when asked to comment. On the other hand maybe it was too early yet for him to elaborate on the many developments of the church he is expected to undertake during his 12 months tenure in office. Schools development however was one area he appears keen on. He also confirmed plans by the Church to build a multi-million museum inside the Malua compound – the heartland of the CCCS.
