Cheers To All Student Mothers PDF Print E-mail

Unmarried and with a young baby in tow, is not an ideal situation to be in when in pursuit of academic success in a tough learning environment like a university. The level of responsibility is even heavier when one must leave the warmth of family support, to venture out into a new world foreign to your cultural upbringing.
The most painful of all is to leave behind a baby you gave birth to and have raised to the point where the bond of love between mother and child starts to take hold.
Only a brave determination and iron resolve in the heart will force you away and keep you away for a prolonged period of time until you are released from your academic shackles - albeit for only a few weeks.
The vicious emotional cycle hits you where it hurts the most when separation time comes around once again.
This should sum up the emotional burden young Alexandra Mauli, a student mother studying at Victoria University went through at the start of the year, and will continue to do so until she graduates.
The path she is taking is an arduous one. But it is one where she has to rise above the emotional challenges to be successful for herself, family and above all baby Harlan.
Her story is probably one of several young student mothers, who have either gone or are going through right now.
But while we feel for the weight of their obligations, there are many positives to be drawn from the agonizing pathway they chose for themselves.
The support and encouragement of understanding parents has to be on top of the list. Everything either starts or ends from inside the family environment.
Any daughter who gives birth out of wedlock is not easy for any parents to accept. But accept they must. Love and understanding conquers all.
Unfortunately this is not so for all parents.
In the words of Alexandra herself, love of her child and of the support of her family has burned an inner strength in her determination and resolve to succeed.
Another crucial positive.
Sadly, not every daughter with the potential to succeed is blessed with the opportunity, to prove they can rise from adversity to make a worthy contribution to society and to provide the kind of care her child and family deserves.
The Alexandra story should be an inspiration to other young girls. Unplanned pregnancy makes life tough, but the test of your resilience is when you dust off your mistakes and redeem yourself. You have to be kind to yourself if you want the world to be kind to you.

Alexandra and many like her should feel privileged for the depth of support their parents have shown them.
There are other girls who would have relished the opportunity to make good on their mistakes, but are denied the opportunity by the lack of parental love and understanding.
Good luck to all the Alexandras and their academic pursuits, your success could provide the inspiration that will open the eyes of parents blinded, by personal misgivings and self pity.
