Week after week we have agonized and agitated over the incarceration of our Associate Minister Joe Keil, that it eventually reached the stage on Monday where we took to the streets to barrack for his release.
A “Free Joe ‘ petition is now on its way to Washington, weighted down with enough moral pressure to demonstrate to the US Sate Department the true character of the person they are dealing with.
It may not be recognized as an official document and the State Department is not obligated to respond but at the very least, it sends out a message.
Last night a press statement from Keil’s legal defence team announced an interesting twist in the judicial process, with the US Justice Department deciding to hold off from proceeding with the prosecution of the court charges.
The delay is to allow the State Department time to review the avalanche of new information pouring through in support of the Associate Minister’s legitimate claim to American citizenship.
He is being asked as well to waive his request for a speedy trial to give the State Department time to study all the new information received.
The new switch in direction comes as defence counsel apply to the court for a change in the terms of Keil’s bail to allow for him to travel to Samoa to await the call up date to appear in the American court.
If you are the analytical type the equation that has presented itself points very strongly to our man flying home as soon as he agrees to waive his request for the judiciary process to be speeded up.
Even more encouraging is the part where the statement says that if the State Department finds favour with Keil’s claim to citizenship that will be the end of the matter with the Judiciary process as well.
Sounds good enough to break out the bottle of Champagne and start tying yellow ribbons round the place to welcome our Associate Minister home.
The sense of relief for the family, people and Government of Samoa is deserving because we worked for it together as a nation.
We should not overlook at the same time the support from our Samoan global community, especially our own SamoanAmerican kinsmen, who were influential in their support of Joe Keil.
Global interest in the controversial issue actually crashed our Samoalivenews.com website. The allowed capacity became so overloaded with fiery debates raging for days, 24/7, on the pros and cons of Joe’s treatment and the reasons behind it, the website could not cope and fell apart.
The exchange of views was to a large extent an important learning curve particularly for Samoans in Samoa and for our SamoanAmerican community in the US.
There were of course radicals at both ends of the heated arguments that ensued, but after the emotions of the moment found time to settle and allowed for analysis and logic to prevail, it was no surprise the deeper understanding and appreciation that came out of it all.
There will always be disagreements on viewpoints but as long as it remains constructive, it is a healthy environment that should always be encouraged.
The Samoalivenews.com website has changed for the better since it became a platform for nurturing freedom of expression.
Unfortunately good debates are sometimes hard to come around when people are trying to recover from a McCain-like clobbering.
Obama Won the Mama of All Presidential elections in the US, the McCainnites are still wandering lost in the wilderness of American politics, trying to workout the cobwebs.
The longer it takes for them to recover the more they resemble the lost children of Israel who mistook McCain for Moses.
It has been said time and time again that Justice eill always prevail and that is needed is patience...something that will not come about if we start to let our emotions get the better of us...It will also be a testament to that the fact that the mechanism of Justice is never at fault it is the human input that create all the problems...like a computer or calcutor it never gives us a wrong answer because the answer is only as correct as the information that we input...

First thing first; The U.S. Department of State is a division of the Federal Government of the U.S. Some have made comments to the State of Missouri as being behind the arrest and apprehension of Mr. Joe Keil. Some have even gone as far as mocking the State of Missouri as a bunch of ‘white folks’ looking to build a case on Mr. Joe Keil because they have nothing else better to do (as if to inject race into this issue).
This is a Federal case with a Federal offense that was allegedly committed by using a passport under false pretense. (However that may have happened) The State of Missouri has nothing to do with this.
I pray Mr. Keil’s case is thrown out by the Federal Judge due to the lack of evidence and unpreparedness by the Department of the State.
I find it interesting that Mr. Joe Keil’s attorney would council Joe to waive his “Right to a Speedy trial” to allow the State Department more time to build their case against his client. Either the Department of State has its case together & in-order to meet the deadline set by the Federal Courts, or they don’t. Would it not be in Mr. Keil’s favor to show up for the beginning of the trial to watch the embarrassment of the Federal Government display itself before the courts & Judge? Federal Judges wouldn’t tolerate the time & tax payers money wasted due to lack of evidence and embarrassment to court house (especially in their courtroom). Just my opinion though; I’m no lawyer.

Robert is right on the money, I live a couple of hours from Branson where this went down, The state of Missouri had nothing to do with this. Its a federal case ( U S Govt.) case so please leave our state out of it. If Joe Keils attorneys have all the evidence proving his innocence, why give the feds time to build up their case, they might come up with more "made up" evidence against Joe. I'm not a laywer either but I question the wisdom of his attorneys
Now, what was the crime? written by why yes--,

What did Joe do that was so illegal?
Why would the U.S.A arrest such a prolific leader and charsimatic individual?
When can we hear the charges read to the public?

Ive been following this case real closely since it went down and I'm beginning to wonder who is really behind this fiasco and why. Its more complicated than it seems. From the speed the INS agents got to Joes location, to the telephone call to New Zealand by the agent that Mr Keil is under arrest, to the convenient trip out of the country by the U S commissioner in Samoa the confiscation of Mr Keils diplomatic passport to the criminal treatment of this poor man upon his arrest. Now, the poor Samoan people are up in protest to the U S govt. while somebody somewhere is just sitting back smiling. I don't know if Mr Keil made any enemies amongst his peers, or did he make somebody upset about anything voted on, Maybe its the RHD cars in Samoa or something else. Maybe its his religious beliefs. What ever information given to these INS agents must have been pretty misleading and false, They must have told them that Mr Keil is Houdini and can escape from any prison. I feel so sad and sorry for the undeserving harsh treatment Mr Keil received. This kind of treatment is the proper treatment for criminals, but Joe was no criminal, and didn't deserve this. Clearly he was a victim of someones anger and vendetta. So I say to the Samoan people, don't hate America, look in your own back yard, you just might see the culprit.
