Picture: The lava flow destruction from which the Leauvaans ran away from
But of course it does make sense. If the Methodists were already at Faleula and the Congregationalists at Malua, having the Catholics brought into the middle as their neighbour in Christ, makes good, acceptable sense.
The faithful and the devout will willingly concede it is divine will. The three denominations are afterall the established ones.
But if God divined all that why explode a volcano? Er.. just asking? Forget I asked Lord!
Unless you are a born Leauva’an and your parents passed on the history of the forced exodus from Savaii down to you, as their parents did and so on, it is hard to feel the depth of appreciation these people and their ancestors have.

The feeling is right there in the core of the soul for them.
People like La’ifai Penitito spoke about the relocation of the villagers with reverence. It is like he was actually there and lived through the whole traumatized experience, instead of his 7-year-old mother who told him the story.
If his mother was first generation Leauva’a, that makes him second generation, and that is quite a fair bit of time since the relocation, for anyone to remain emotionally attuned to what happened.
Yet when he relates the drama of what took place and the respect he accords his forefathers and the others who led the migration from Savaii , it is really something to admire and be in awe of.
It makes it easier for a stranger to the village to understand and commend the large turnout of the sons and daughters of Leauva’a, from all corners of the world for the occasion.
It makes it easier also to appreciate why they spend the last two weeks celebrating, with families and village folks at home.
What they were celebrating was an important chapter of Samoa’s history, written for them by their forefathers.
As offsprings, the story of what happened will remain a part of their personal histories and of their children and childrens children.
When you are an outsider mixed up in one way or another with the Leauva’ans as they celebrate, a strong felling of envy is created by simply feeling the gratitude and gratefulness they hold deep inside of them.
They ran out of Savaii in fear as molten rock froze everything in its path of destruction. Where they were running to and how their lives and that of their children will turn out were the big unknowns.
A century later the new generation looks back at what their parents came through and realize that in the end, things have turned out for the better.
Most importantly, from the perspective of village chiefs like La’ifai Penitito, Leauva’a was born out of the will of God.
‘He Wanted Us Here’.

Rationalization or Revelation?
written by Sifa, September 30, 2008
I think it is the former, unless these historians have specific proof that God has told/revealed to them that He willed it.

It is a healthy and positive attitude, however, to “make lemonade when given lemons”. Having made lemonade (fortune), we then look back and see the lemons (affliction) as so-called “blessings in disguise”. Adversity also increases resolve and faith. But the drawback of seeing things exclusively this way, and in the Matavanu event especially, is that it will deny the people the chance to be remorseful, repentant and regretful for any possible wrongdoing that triggered the eruption, which, more often than not, represents a typical repercussion and punishment in Christian and religious dogma.

Also, these Catholic historians should petition to change the lyrics of what is now a Samoan classic, “Aue Ta Fefe”, which recounts the eruption. Contrary to what these historians believe, the song calls the event a curse (mala).

whoa, people can cause volcanic eruptions? where can i get some of this power from?

Catholic historians should petition to change
no, they shouldnt. and why would you want that? pretty ironic that you want "catholic" historians to change cultural superstition with catholic superstition... projection much?

sifa, i dont have much time to correct your silly, presumptuous and ignorant statements again so please go brush up on your logic and critical thinking skills.

I couldnt really figure out a title for this but anyway, the point is..what happened in Savaii 100 years ago is not anyones doing, but nature itself. we cannot blame the leavaans for what happened then just because they happened to be there to occupy the land in which the event happened. The problem with us is that we believe in too many superstitious crap! What..can man cause a volcano to errupt now? The earth has “plates” and when two plates hit each other, one goes under and becomes “molten” which means it gets so hot, the ground turns into liquid. The molten stuff finds a hole in the ground and comes out the top. Yes that is exactly what happened. The people of leauvaa just happened to be there at the site of the volcano. It could have been anyone. It could have been any village! So please stop this nuisance about God bringing the Catholic to upolu out of a volcanic eruption!
Leauvaa consists not of just Catholics! No theres other religions as well such as the Congregationalists. Just because the Catholic religion dominates the village doesnt mean that it is a Catholic village!
But then again, if we want to believe what happened in savaii was due to God's will of bringing the Catholic church to Upolu..why then was the Catholic church burnt to ashes and not the EFKS church? Why did the lava go around the church and not bring it down? If this is the case, then what happened years ago was a curse..as the famous samoan song goes.."o le mala"..I dont mean to blame the church, i blame the people who think that Leauvaa's 100years anniverasry is to praise the catholics of Leauvaa..please..the village is not yours!
Oh wel, unfortunately i dont have the time to put enough information in to this thing but yeah..hope i made some sense..ahahah smilies/grin.gif

I think everyone is so jealous because Leauvaa people is part of Samoan history therefore they all trying to find something or story to put them down but I say get a life you jealous people and " LONG LIVE TO ALL THE LEAUVAA & GOD BLESS EVERYONE." I am a proud Leauvaa living overseas and I do feel and know the history because my grandparent are part of that history. Congratulations Leauvaa it is a job well done.

LEAUVAA RESIDENT
written by Mark Tevaga, October 15, 2008
malo lou susuga, well LEAUVAA is sure inthe books of samoa, they are in the history book. TEVAGA PALETASALA, whom was a chief within the village was the main person the village was put into the history books, LEAUVAA was once called SAMALAEULU, which is where mount matavanu erupted urging villagers to move out of the island and start a new beginning in APIA.

They are remembering how their ancestors left their homes in Savaii 100 years ago, and moved to that spot on western Upolu where they have been living since. On August 4, 1905 Mount Matavanu erupted emitting a river of molten lava down the mountainside, which destroyed the coastal village of Lealatele as it continued on towards the sea. Surviving residents moved to another nearby village called Solomea where they lived until they relocated to Le’auva’a in Upolu in 1908. Stories handed down say they came on boats, canoes and whatever they could have kept afloat. Descendants of Leauvaa from around Samoa and the world are gathering in their village to offer thanksgiving and praise. Chairman of the Catholic Church Tevaga Filipo Kapeli Su’a says they decided to celebrate for two weeks because it’s a once in a lifetime occasion. He commented, “We never know if our generation would reach another 100 years like the one we are celebrating now.”
PROUD LEAUVA'A CITIZEN
written by ifz, October 30, 2008
I Margaret Tuala daughter of Tuala Akenese Ah San and a decedant of Tuala Tulo who was a member of the Legislative Assembly in 1949 would like to inform you that Leauva'a is definitely in the history books of Samoa. I appreciate and respect everyones opinion on the subject of leauva'a celebration. Malo, malo lava!

May God bless all the leauva'a people locally and around the globe for their continuous support and contributions towards the 100 years celebration. It was such an eventful celebration of a life time.

Soifua.

Lets just clear something... there were still some survivors of the eruption that stayed behind in Savaii and continued in the village of Samalaeulu up until today (Samalaeulu & Leauvaa are both part of Lealatele and have the same 'faalupega'). So not everyone of 'LEALATELE' village decided to make the move to Upolu. Many stayed.

No one can claim that the catholic church first arrived in Leauvaa because Leauvaa is in Upolu... Samalaeulu, Savaii is the first place the catholic church arrived.

Nesi - your pride erects your stupidity ... no one here is jealous of Leauvaa - we congratulate you on the celebrations and achievements. We are not trying to bring anyone down. just laying down the facts.
