For obvious reasons, I carry on about the Pacific Island community here in Sydney quite a bit. The challenges and accomplishments of our people are very important to document. This coming Saturday, the 8th of November we celebrate our Pacific community on an even larger scale with the ‘Pacific Unity Festival’, being held at Tempe Recreational Reserve in Sydney.

The Pacific Unity website, describes Pacific Unity as Australia’s Annual Pacific Peoples Event. Similar to the importance of the ‘Pasifika Festival’ to the Pacific community of New Zealand; Pacific Unity serves a cultural purpose in the gathering of Pacific peoples living in Sydney to congregate and mingle.

Essentially Pacific Unity is a day of celebration and performance. In conjunction with sponsors such as Worldwide Travel Services, Western Union Money Transfer, Netball Australia, New South Wales Rugby League and many others, Pacific Unity makes a commitment to community awareness in the Pacific community of Sydney.

As part of the Festival there is a Touch Football and Netball competition. As well as this the day caters for the performance aspect of Pacific Island culture by showcasing performances from many of the different Pacific Island groups around Sydney and the Pacific.

As an organisation, Pacific Unity is non–profit, dedicated to South Pacific communities and the general public of Sydney. The main aims of the ‘Pacific Unity Festival’ are to raise awareness of Pacific communities; their businesses, sport, creativity and the support services that are made available to help them.

As a person who attended the largest Polynesian celebration in the world, the ‘Pasifika Festival’ I would like to express how excited I am to see what the Pacific Unity festival of Sydney is like. I am looking forward to seeing the great myriad of entertainment, talent coming out of the South Pacific community right here in Sydney, Australia. Until then.
