Protesting MPs Poised To Unite

Members of Parliament who protested against the road switch legislation are ready to unite in a political party. “This will be a milestone in the political history of Samoa,” says one prominent MP, at the centre of efforts for a united party. “I don’t want to pre-empt anything right now. “The country will be duly informed when we are in a position to officially launch our new party.” Newsline understands an announcement may be made today. Newsline has further learned that the new political party is hoping to reconcile longstanding divisions in the MPs currently opposing the Government. Party opposition in Parliament crumbled when the Samoa United Democratic Party, SDUP, collapsed under a leadership takeover and no longer have the numbers to be officially acknowledged in the House. Of the 49 MPs who form Parliament, 14 are officially recognised as independents, including the two former members of the Government’s Human Rights Protection Party who resigned in protest against the road switch law.
