Sliding Along Elegi Way PDF Print E-mail
Written by Pio Sioa
Sunday, 05 October 2008

After ‘months’ of being dragged along the painful gravel of a heartless hiking spree of oil and petroleum prices, you would think the consumers in Apia would be jumping up and down at the slide in prices that started in September.
They have this week, at the start of October, dropped a few sene more.
The public was happily informed this week that the price of petrol is down by 9.4 sene per litre, 29.5 sene per litre for diesel and 27.3 sene for a litre of kerosene.
The Minister of Finance, Niko Lee Hang felt that Samoans should ‘enjoy the reduced price …and let us hope that the market remains low.”
Hooray!
Hey zip it . Better still, go suck a lemon or something to sober up.
If you had on your ‘read between the lines’ cap when Mr. Lee Hang gave his good news, you would have picked up easily on what he was actually saying , ‘enjoy it while it lasts folks.’
Maybe if he had come out and said that outright, it would have solicited a more boisterous public response.
Perhaps a unison outcry of public reaction would have been much louder if the price shuffle gave him the chance to snap into his price increase ‘tauloto’ that the changing prices “are beyond our control.”
Anyways…maybe it is unfair to be throwing body punches at the poor Minister’s exposed ribs.

The tale however of the price tag is frustrating enough any exposed ribs are ripe for a good solid ripping.
The fact that they happen to be the Minister’s ribs ‘ is beyond our control’ when frustration drives you out of control.
When you put $50 in the tank, try not to blink as you roll out of the petrol station. You could save putting your hand up to shut off your surprised mouth at how far $50 takes you these days.
Maybe if you pay that money for a couple of people to carry you around, you could stretch the value of your $50 a lot further than investing it in a tank of petrol.
Carting your obese body around, will give them good exercise so they can stay healthy and be more productive to the family.
Remember, you are providing them with employment. With your $50 they will be able to provide for the family legitimately, rather than join the break and entry crowd.
Okay...okay…so you may think this all sounds corny enough to feel like someone is grasping for straws Maybe it does seem or sound that way.
But on the other hand, things ‘beyond our control’ have a tendency to do that to any completely normal and responsible person.
Samoa as those of us who do know, is inundated with recommendations and suggestions about what Government should or should not do to ease the pressure of expensive Arab oil.
Nothing seems to work so far or visible enough to pretend it is working.
The workable options available to us are limited, so we should continue to look for new and more innovative possibilities.
We are regarded by some who were raised in affluent societies of the world as a poor and under developed nation.
Maybe we are by their standards but that makes it a subjective issue.
If we are a poor people, why is obesity one of the leading health killers for Samoans?
Maybe it has to do with our elegi diet.
Hopefully it is not. One hates to be reminded of what an old village man once said;
“ We eat our elegi in the privacy of our home and go to bed without worrying about our neighbours finding out about it. “Tomorrow is another day and if we can’t have steak for dinner why should it be skin off our noses to dine again on another sikiu-elegi simmering in the pot.
“ At least that is better than losing more than just the skin off your nose, waiting for a $700 billion bail out from your Uncle Sam.”

You are in the wrong business Mr. Sioa. You should be a chameleon. You've gone from the price of petrol to punching the Minister of Finance in the ribs. Then you take it to the old man and his dinner choice and end it with the US Bailout situation. CONGRATULATIONS! You are a nut-job. You are deemed a one trick pony. Your tremendous efforts to defeat Samoans living in America has run out of "petrol". (putt putt putt putt...uma)

Samoan Gal You Traitor
written by Vai, October 07, 2008
Hey Samoan Gal, are you turning soft on the enemy? You sure sound like it. Is the petrol firing up the resistance running out
( putt..putt..putt...uma)?
Methinks you're turning mushy because you're starting to fall for Sioa's 'nuts'.
Shhh...careful of Sifa's claws...she's been on the chase way before you ..hee hee hee
You're okay with Robert, as long as he doesn't bat for the same side.
Hey just trying to help out!Mmwahh

SamoaGal, go easy on the writer with his opinions of playing the class warfare of the haves and have-not. Gas prices were over inflated to about $150 a barrel just several months ago. The free market does exactly what it’s suppose to do in seeing supply and demand is worth what it is?
Economics 101 is a brain banger for some of the commentators who comment on a writer’s opinion piece that border-lines socialism. Price per barrel of crude oil was down to $90.
Maybe “uncle Sam” should have thrown $1 Billion into Samoa’s treasury to redistribute to the all the folks in Samoa for purchasing more goods and services. Oh, wait! Inflation would set in because prices on goods and services in Samoa would go through the roof!
Ah, I don’t even know where to end with this? I have to go make some money now. I’ll be back later. Soifua.

Go you beauties

You Samoan Gal and Co. remind me of tag team wrestling. When one gets beaten up he/she is tagged out and another one jumps in.
Browsing the comments here I must say there's been a lot of tagging in and out for you guys? Does that mean you're always getting beaten up?
When we were kids in Samoa, every time my friends and I came across a small bird on the ground trying to fly. we always take turns blowing up the tail tail end of the poor thing. We believed that the more time we spend blowing the stronger it gets, enough to fly off.
What you guys are doing kinda remind me of that. Samoan Gal gets a blowing up the tail end from Robert, then it's the other way around.
Hey I'm not complaining. Merely making an observation that's all.
Eye Candy
written by Robert, October 09, 2008
I was never one for watching wrestling unless I was browsing through my channels to catch the news or to TiVo a program and stumbled on divas climbing in the ring for their match. The divas always made a man pause a little longer on that wrestling channel for the good “eye candy” show they put on. Anyhow, back to my friend Vao who is observing with a watchful eye?

Sioa’s (writer) writing reminds me of my political science professor in college. Who’s lectures where charismatic and full of rhetorical theology and phrases that some in class where mesmerized and at awe with. The more he lectured on his ideology of socialism as a Liberal and hatred for western capitalism, the more young minds soaked it up and believe it! The more unhinged he became! Yet he found it comforting to continue his way of teaching and lectures because very few like myself, would raise a hand and call him out on every issue he was for with socialism and against western capitalism?

Makes me laugh because the guy gets paid ten times more in a capitalistic society than he would in a socialistic society to spew his rhetoric on a view he refuses to go and live in. Go figure?

I’ve read entire Anti-American sentiments & pro Communist China articles from Sioa with no end in sight.
I don’t know of any other country in the pacific that celebrated 50 something years of China’s P.R.C. being independent? Somehow, the Samoan government found a way to do so as their building relationship grows with the Chi-cons.

And I smirk at my lap-top screen knowing, it’s not the common folks that are celebrating China’s 50 something years of independence?

It’s the “Elites” in Apia, Samoan MP that rub elbows in its government hall ways and writers like Sioa that is championing this ideology. And they do it by shoving it down the very few Samoans throat that are eating elegi and the Samoans who wouldn’t know any better when it comes to politics.

Does anyone know if Samoa will celebrate 4th of July in 2009 to celebrate Americas 233 years of independence from the U.K.?

No! And they should not be! Like they should not have China’s! Oh, but the frosting on the cake was so delicious and the writer couldn’t resist itself from all the wonderful things that made China the cake Samoans should want?

Maybe if our beloved Samoa was included in the $700 Billion dollar bailout like it did American Samoa as a territory of the U.S.A. The “Elites” MP, writers and socialist in Apia would find a way to plug some ceremony event in its calendar come next July?

But, I better stop. I may end up shooting the bird dead when I really want it around so Samoa Gal, I and the others can continue to blow each other’s tail end for your amusement as you observed. The same way I enjoy Divas when they put on a good “eye candy” show at your wrestling match.

Enjoy,
facing reality

Facing reality can bring out the defense maganesium. The truth to it all, is rather your on one side or the other side you will always be samoan blowing each others end of the tail. LOL That's funny Vao! Robert and Samoan Gal is it Obama or is it Mccain that will blow the end of your tail out when the SLIDING OF THE ELEGI WAY COMES UR WAY? Peace LOL..............
Tag..my turn...
written by SamoanGal in the USA, October 09, 2008
Vao Vao Vao...Why blow on a bird when its probably hurting so bad? Your breath probably disabled the poor thing...lol e lafo aku se toothbrush? hahahaha......e lelei le tag-team ..e laku lesi ku'i le ulu ae laku lesi kiki le magava...lol...

Tango: How about McCain and Obama come and blow your tail? But then again, they probably dont like the smell of elegi...LOL!

Well, I gotta go make that elegi steak..take care!
"McCain" is my tail end.
written by Robert, October 09, 2008
Tango, John McCain will be blowing my tail end as commander and chief as my president for your information since you asked. A lot of Kudos, to you brother if you live in Samoa and seem interested in American politics. I love Elegi! I love it with tomato sauce or even in the regular can that I add cabbage, tomatoes and onions. I love it best with rice and Elegi sauce that is poured all over the top of it. Yummy!

Elegi will definitely slide the American peoples way faster than Samoans can distribute it during fa’a lavelave or buying it for consumption, if O-Bama is handed the White House with all his promises he can’t afford!

But the real reality Tango, is the choice of: Do you sit there and accept the apa Elegi to eat that you are dealt with in life and be content? Or, you get up and do something so you have a choice other than the “Elegi” that comes sliding your way?

I love Elegi. And of course, I eat it every now and then because it’s delicious and it’s a “choice”.

Elegi is good and healthful!
written by Sifa, October 10, 2008
The fracas over Samoan-Americans and Samoans in Samoa is getting old and becoming a nuisance rather than a stimulating debate topic. If I may say this for Samoans in Samoa, and for any other non-Americans for that matter, a Samoan in Samoa CAN become an AMERICAN, but never a Chinese - for example. Likewise, other nationalities all have chances to become Americans - not Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, etc., Think deeply about that. America is very unique in that regard, therefore, stop badmouthing Samoan-Americans, since it’s real possible that you (Samoans in Samoa) can, and will, become American yourselves down the road.

Explanation: America is about the only country (Canada might qualify too) in the world that is a nation - not a race! In modern terms, WASPs sometimes are considered the “true Americans” (besides the American Indians), and yet such a designation has faded and become insignificant as America becomes more a nation of immigrants than of a particular race or ethnicity.

I’m still amazed at Mr. Sioa’s anti-American proposition; he still manages to infuse and inject a sarcastic and vitriolic reference to the $700 billion bailout. Well, it’s his forte, albeit a vindictive one, what can I say?

By the way, why besmirch the value of the elegi? It’s a more healthful food than what most Samoans eat nowadays.

Have a good day everyone!
Dido!

Kudos to you for the comps. I will say that my wife and our two daughters and I are doing well in Orange County and just leave it at that. We visit Upolu once a year during most of the Christmas holiday or during the summer because we just love it! Love the family that is back there, the people and love the environment!

Our girls go to the University of Utah & BYU in Provo. So our house bleeds red and blue. I have not met the Fonoti’s but may get lucky some day and run into them?

Have a good time lufilufi-ing through some of the stimulating debate we inject ourselves with on here.

Manuia,
