Too often we obsess about what is going wrong in our world, the wars we start, the battles we fight, the conflicts we encounter, our own confusion and the ends that do not meet.
In Samoa the Government is often criticized for not doing their job, for being inefficient, for doing this and that wrong, we see it as one entity, as one body that is supposed to be perfect.
Sometimes we see the Government as that big detached part of ourselves, of our country and of the places we belong to.
I write of course with the full knowledge that I am one of those people, whose dismay at occasional leadership blunders result in the onslaught of editorial criticisms.
But criticism is healthy, constructive ones at that.
Often however in the process of forming the argument against the latest unsound decision by Government one can easily forget that in saying ‘Government’ one is referring to not just the leaders that be, but also the various people employed under the various arms of the Government.

The machine
The machinery that is Government is ran by so many people, from the girl that introduces Ambassadors’ to His Highness, the guy that escorts the same Ambassador to all his visits, the guy who turns up every morning to work at the Government building pressing precious buttons on the elevators carrying people up and down, the Prime Ministers driver, night or day, rain or shine he is readily available and waiting for him anywhere at anytime, the clerks at the various Ministries who will willingly take out a few minutes from their work to explain and to assist, the women whose jobs are to maintain the flowers in Government buildings, the boys who pick up the rubbish every morning in the town area, the receptionist, the delivery boy, the tea lady, the cleaners, everyone single one of them contributes to making the machine grind.
It is easy to overlook these people in the pursuit of a perfect governance ideology, but the fact is, these people, the silent majority are a greater reflection of what the Government does everyday then what is mostly visible to us.
Take for instance the boy who makes tea for Samoa Tourism Authority.
He turns up with a neatly pressed shirt every morning, always with a smile on his face, always ready to say hello and so pleased with the job that he was given.
How about the lady who cleans ablution areas for the National Hospital, she is always beautifully dressed, so well composed, so efficient and also very proud of her position.
Let’s not forget the official guards for Government officials, they are staunch but also quite professional, they make you appreciate the systems that be.
How about the nurses, young attorneys, doctors and teachers who get paid not so admirable wages to do what they do?

Anyone who takes pride in thier line of work is admirable even those who do not get compensated accordingly. My hat's off to all Blue/White Collar workers who have a reason to wake up and survive the daily grind... smilies/kiss.gif
