One innocent schoolgirl is currently in pain from injuries she never thought would happen to her when she woke up in the morning to go to school. Nor too did members of her family who were exposed to the emotional trauma they never anticipated.
The experience of what this student and her family are going through now, could have happened to any one of the thousands of families in Samoa, who send kids to school every week.
If this was an incident in the villages or the districts, the authority of the village chiefs and orators would virtually guarantee a feast for everyone. Families of the kids involved would not be invited though even if they provided the ‘village meal.’
Simple and unorthodox perhaps but as we all know, effective. Even those who were involved in the frenzied mob would know so and be seriously wary about being involved.
Alas, the Apia township is not a village. It is a melting pot for all the ‘here and there’ from the villages.
In a school environment, the teachers take over. Around the township it is the police. Have they failed?
The all out riot last Friday was a horror according to eyewitnesses, and for the business community who suffered expensive damages. What can be done?
Students fighting in public places is not a new problem, but the latest turn of events is.
Fighting has now escalated into full scale riots, with the offenders becoming more dangerous by arming themselves with more lethal weapons to threaten lives.
Even the police reportedly scurried for cover as the mob turned on them.
Just a few days ago two college schools were brought together by their teachers to kiss and make up. Have teachers failed in their worthy attempts?
The police have also put the fear of prison in school kids found fighting on the streets. Has that failed too?  In fact is that why the kids are now turning on them?
The Prime Minister has said on national radio that interschool sporting events could be cancelled. Is that the solution?
One has to feel for the teachers who worked hard to raise our young to be good upstanding citizens we can be proud of.
The deterioration of important values that has led to last Friday’s riot is a sad reflection on all their hard work.
The PM alleged on national radio that some of the teachers were agitating for the kids to resort to violence, that is a serious affront to the hard work of their other colleagues and to the profession.
Maybe this should be priority number one for the investigating police. Ferret out the teachers who may have been involved and press serious criminal charges against them.
These same teachers should also be banned from ever teaching again.
Another area worth contemplating is how a riot of this scale could be allowed to happen, when patrolling police officers are always around town, if not on foot patrol then on their little mini bikes?
The problem as we have seen last week should no longer be looked at as kids, stepping out of place to vent excess hormones.
A young girls lies injured in hospital who is lucky to escape with injuries that will eventually heal. What if the injuries were fatal?
It is not as if no attempts have been made in the past to find solutions to the problem. Unfortunately it does not seem to be lasting.
So maybe it is time that new solutions are looked at very seriously now. Schools reconciling their differences is a noble attempt and should be continued.
Police visits to school should be revived, especially during the schools rugby season, as this seems to be the sparking point of all the violence.
But still, harsher penalties will have to be thought out, if not for the schools guilty of starting the violence, then something that will extend the punishment to the parents regardless of their innocence. If it works in the villages then it should work in Apia as well.
The situation now calls for more hard line measures, if the risks of serious injuries to innocent young lives are at stake.
Parents sent their kids to school everyday for a reason we all know so well.
With all the sacrifices we make as parents and the hopes we hold for the future, the last thing you as a parent will ever want to learn while at work, is that seeing your kids off to school in the morning, was the last time for you to see them alive.

This is now the second article I have read about this school violence and I hear little about the parents role in teaching their children better values and it seems to fall all on the teachers. This needs to begin at home and the parents should have to pay stiff fines and the children put on probation. If indeed there are teachers involved in such ridiculous behaviour as adult role models then they too should be harshly dealt with. Out of control and violent children grow up to be adults with the same problems.
Don Bosco needs more discipline
written by Maria LeiSam, April 29, 2008
I was a teacher at Avele college for many years and never at that time did I know of any teachers at that school agitating for students to resort to violence. In fact it was the opposite. Mrs Aiga Esera, Avele College's principal and staff were very much against violence in schools and strongly discouraged such behaviours on and off school hours by harsh penalties such as suspensions, hard labours and even expulsions. I am pretty sure Mrs Esera and her staff are still doing the same up to today. I for one, strongly blame Don Bosco school. They are a bunch of high school failures (who could not make it to UPY or Polytechnic) who are given a second chance by their parents to learn something positive but instead they use their times to look for troubles!. To make things worse, they are under the guidance of teachers who dare to call themselves teachers when they are not even qualified to teach nor to advise, discipline and counsel students properly!. Don Bosco should learn to stay out of colleges/high schools games and problems. They are supposed to be a post-secondary institution and they should stay that way in everything. I wonder what the director of education of Catholics schools is doing about this ??. Don Bosco and St Josephs causing troubles every year seems to be an ongoing problem and I don't hear the director reacting to all these!!. Parents also need to step up their acts and do something about this before someone gets killed!!.

So disappointed at Marialeisam's comment. Blaming Don Bosco and St. Joe for causing all these messes. I respect what you say cuz you were a teacher over at Avele. But the reality is when their is no cat the mices cause trouble. that is what happen. When those students leave the compound they get involve into a lot a trouble. Sometimes the old boys involves too. For the records, if not Avele students are causing trouble then old boys are causing trouble and then students get involve. YOu know, in Don Bosco that is what teachers do. They warn students about discipline. There are harsh penalties. Sometimes the parents would show up and do the ifoga e koe faaae ai sona alo. O le alofa lava i maka o kamaiki. But I believe we don't need to come up here and blame each school cuz we don't have the full story. what is reported is one side of the story. may be next week will be another side. Therefore, Maria take it easy on the commentation. Sei e vaai iai oga fai lea o sau fikaration...

THINK TWICE, ACT WISE!
written by Sr Sialei P.Taofinuu, April 30, 2008
Malialeisam - An Educator or a STIRRER????? I feel very sad about your view regarding calling or naming the Don Bosco students as "bunch of high school failures" and also accusing the teachers - UNQUALIFIED EDUCATORS! It is sad because it is coming from an educated person if you are a real an "Educator". No one is a failure in this world my dear! You might be a good teacher catering for all your students! The Don Bosco Educators are teaching skills to those Don Bosco students - "bunch of failures" - might be your students can't do the things that those students are doing! Do you think all the samoan students can make for UPY, UNIVERSITY, POLYTECHNIC...? What about if your students cannot achieve UPY, UNI, POLYTECHNIC???? What and how would like to CALL or NAMING THEM???? BUNCH OF AVELE COLLEGE FAILURES??????How would you like to call the AVELE COLLEGE TEACHERS/EDUCATORS if those students can't make it!

The DIRECTOR of the Catholic Schools believes and upholds Christian and Moral Value Education in Catholic Schools in Samoa. And that is a MUST in all Catholic Schools in Samoa!

Please, I don't think so what you have expressed is helpful at the moment....the fire is too hot! You have added in another afi aulama. If that is the attitude, I think our motivations and reasons are immoral and totally wrong!!!! Let us look for best solutions to prevent our young people from such attitudes and behaviours! It is better for us now to THINK TWICE, ACT WISE!!!

Please Sis, e leai se tagata e vale i le silafaga a le Atua. Everybody is WORTH AND SPECIAL IN THE EYES OF GOD -

WE ARE ALL BORN FOR GREATER THINGS - THIS IS WHAT ST. JOHN BOSCO BELIEVES! HE BELIEVES IN YOUNG PEOPLE - HE WORKED FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WHO WERE IN PRISONS! THAT WAS THE PLACE WHERE ST. DON BOSCO STARTED HIS WORK WITH YOUNG PEOPLE. HE BELIEVES IN THE GOODNESS OF EVERY YOUNG PERSON! LET US LOVE OUR YOUNG PEOPLE, ESP. THE FAILURES, THE POOR ONES, THE UNDERPRIVILEGED!

That is another reason why young people reacted negatively, because of how we view them and look at them as "FAILURES".

YOUNG PEOPLE OF SAMOA....YOU WERE BORN FOR GREATER THINGS!!! BELIEVE IN THAT AND BELIEVE IN YOURSELVES! YOU CAN DO GREAT THINGS DESPITE OF OUR WEAKNESSES AND MISTAKES! THERE ARE PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE FOR US TO CHANGE OUR ATTITUDES TOWARDS LIFE!

LIFE IS AN OPPORTUNITY - GRAB IT!
LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL - ADMIRE IT!
LIFE IS A GIFT - TREASURE IT!
LIFE IS LIFE - DEFEND IT!

I encourage the students of Don Bosco Technical Institute, to pray to God and to St. Don Bosco to help and journey with you at this time of difficulties. Not only to the Don Bosco students, but to all the young people of Samoa, esp. to the underprivileged and the neglected youth of Samoa.

Systematic Problem...
written by Jack, April 30, 2008
We can blame the parents, teachers, schools, government and whoever but the blame should lie in our systematic attitude when comes to sports and competions. We taught our children only to know how to win but not to loooosssseeee!!! We failed to teach them how to act when win or loose. This is why they act stupid when they win and even worse when loose. Anyway, the government should close down those schools inciting or instigating violences if there is no other answers to this problem...especially these same schools has been showing their toughness in this way instead of in the class rooms and on the playing field.

Talofa le atunuu pele.
Just wanna add my thoughts to whats going on with our youth back home.
I'm, a proud Samoan in Hawaii. Left the island@the age 22. I'm an old pupil of SJC. By reading whats going on with our schools is nothing new. I remember the 80s & 90s it was worse.. Its start with schools and end up a conflict between some villages.. So, I blame teachers, principals parents & head of governments. Should make rules, laws & aoai faalelei fanau.. too much binkos in communities & others unuseful staff but tupulagas should be the 1st piorities.

Consequences!
written by Amanaia, April 30, 2008
Send all the teachers and students involved in the riot to prison. Or have them all "publicly caned" with bamboo canes infront of the falefono i Mulinu'u. I'm serious about this! They did this to one snot-nosed Amrican kid who vandalized cars in Singapore back in the 90s when I lived there. Of course the Western media couldn't believe that the Singaporean Government would ever do such a thing. But they did! I bet that young man will think twice about ever setting foot in Singapre or messing with other people's properties.
We should have this sort of law in Samoa as well. We already do this at home and in the village so why not implement "public caning" of such offenders like these young people for all to see. This should help our young people remember that there are consequences for their actions and it pays to heed the advice of their elders that the fa'asamoa is rooted deeply in the respect of people and property.
Talofae isi o'u atunu'u pele o Samoa. E fa'anoanoa lava ona o uiga le migao o nei alo ma fanau ua ta'u valea atu ai ma nai matua ma aiga o lo'o fa'amoemoe mo se lumana'i lelei o latou fanau.
I propose the caning of public offenders in Samoa from now on! It's still better than cutting off body parts like they do in Saudi Arabia! We should seriously study the Singaporean system of law and order especially now that young violent offenders are on the rise in Samoa. Mea lega e maua i le fa'alogo i le gangsta rap music.
Riot Gear Next Time
written by Olo, April 30, 2008
I expect the Police not to be so laid-back next time - thinking it was just the normal after-school punch-up between schools. Time to bring out the full riot gear next time and baton charge the little punks.

They might want to also step up their security at inter-school rugby and athletics events. Avele will be planning revenge.
